Sheffield Wednesday have been in and around the top six for most of the season and a few weeks back looked shoo-ins for the play offs after beating Charlton, Huddersfield and Blackburn in back to back games.

At that stage, it seemed Derby would be the team Cardiff would need to overhaul and the Bluebirds gained a much-needed 2-1 home victory over the Rams.

But suddenly Wednesday opened up the back door themselves as they were hammered 4-1 at lowly Bristol City and only managed dreary home draws with Ipswich and relegated MK Dons.

The point gained at Derby at the weekend was creditable enough, but in the context of those previous three failings it proved to be a good result for the Bluebirds.
