Former Cardiff City striker Rudy Gestede has won the hearts of football fans after spending Friday night helping to feed the homeless in Birmingham city centre.

The Aston Villa star, who has just been relegated with his club, was pictured on Albert Street making tea for people living on the streets of Birmingham.

He turned up unannounced to hand out food and drink at the Help the Homeless and Needy group event.

Volunteer Jordan Goodridge posted on Facebook: "To be serving the tea with Rudy Gestede with help the homeless and needy on a Friday night on Albert Street is incredible.

"He bought some food along to help contribute to the feed tonight. #respect"

Asked how he came to be at the event, she told the Birmingham Mail: "I don't know to be honest!

"He turned up with food with his friend, stayed for he duration of the feed, helped hand the tea out and chatted with the homeless and needy people after they ate.

"We're so thankful to him for helping out, what he did was really appreciated. He's a really nice guy and it's brilliant for him to think to do something like this."

Gestede has endured a difficult season at the crisis-hit club, scoring just five goals since his move from Blackburn Rovers in the summer.

He played for Cardiff between 2011 and 2014 before leaving for Blackburn after an initial loan spell at the Bluebirds' Championship rivals.

The 27-year-old will be back in the Championship next season after Villa's relegation was confirmed last weekend following defeat to Manchester United.
