Russell Slade says Bolton's financial implosion is a stark warning to clubs like Cardiff City

FRIDAY 22 APR 2016

BY STEVE TUCKER

The Bluebirds' boss has said that he has to appreciate the financial side of his job to prevent financial disaster

Cardiff City boss Russell Slade insists what has happened to Bolton is a stark warning to clubs like the Bluebirds themselves.

The Trotters arrive in the Welsh capital tomorrow having been relegated from the Championship already and destined to finish bottom of the league after a disastrous campaign.

The Lancashire outfit, who enjoyed life in the Premier League previously, have found themselves in real financial problems and despite a takeover, will now have to steady the ship in the third-tier next term.

Clough has been a rare bright spot in a bleak spell for Bolton

Despite the wealth of owner Vincent Tan, Cardiff have laboured under a transfer embargo of their own this season and have debts themselves although Tan has vowed to make the club solvent once more by 2020.

But Slade believes if it was not for the prudent financial management he has operated since arriving in the Welsh capital, the Bluebirds’ fate might well have echoed that of their opponents this weekend.

“It is a warning, yes. Bolton would have had a very competitive budget for this league,” said Slade.

“They spent many years in the Premier League. Now that there’s a takeover there’s an opportunity for them to rebuild, but unfortunately they are going to have to rebuild in League One. Which is probably not what they had planned for.

“Of course, it’s a warning. But how many times has that happened to? It’s happened to Wolves, to Nottingham Forest and to Leeds. It’s happened to really big clubs. They’ve not just dipped into the Championship, they’ve then gone down another level.”

Slade has had to get rid of a host of players during his time at Cardiff and slash the Bluebirds’ wage bill too. And the Cardiff manager believes it has been that process which has stopped the Welsh club falling even further from grace just like Bolton.

“We’ve avoided all that, we’ve avoided that massively,” added Slade.

“That was my job, of course, to stabilise and turn things around here. It’s also my job to appreciate the financial side of it as well. That’s played a big part since I’ve been here. No longer do we get the money we would have got in the Premier League and the payments now, as you know, get reduced every season.”

He takes the credit for the good things, like financial stability, but he will not take the blame for bad things - like the pathetic performances on the pitch and his lack of tactical knowledge. The things which he is employed to do.

He gets my thanks for stabilising the club,no small feat considering the mess we were in.I don't think we are that far off being a top 6 side.

He's doing exactly what he was employed to do, and exactly what I expected from a low budget manager. Hopefully he can keep us in the Championship for the next few seasons until the club can start operating on a sound financial footing again.

By which time our gates will have gone down to about 5000, football will be dire and we'll be hovering just above the drop zone. Can't wait for a couple more years under good old Russ :sladeout: :sladeout: :sladeout:

Alot of them were brought in to add work ethic (in training) and be squad player's and stabilise the squad as mentioned by players there were a few bad apples trying to divide the players when he first took over

Slade will never get us up, but can hopefully keep us in the championship. But he is right about finances, small clubs like our have to watch the finances. Only the powerful premier league clubs in this country can speculate to accumulate and get bigger and stronger. Each region of the country will eventually have one big powerful side in the top division to draw it's fan base of new type fans from, and around that you will have smaller feeder type clubs :bluebird:

Not sure why our fans want our manager to come out to the press putting himself down when he's meant to be stern, strong and optimistic for the remainder of the season. He's received far too much flack during his tenure here so why shouldn't he sing his own praises

Don't get that they were brought in for work ethic, the players Russell signed are lower championship quality top of league one, it's more money wasted in my eyes buying loads of cheap players who aren't good enough. I'd rather sign a smaller number quality players than have alot more mediocre players, all Russell has done is replaced expensive shit with cheap shit. It can be done signing quality players on the cheap but Russell isn't savvy enough in the transfer market to find the hidden gems

Bloody hell he must have one hell of a PR agent. To try and turn we have an excellent chance of the play offs to no chance thanks to the clown in the cap is an excellent move on his behalf. Yes he had to sell and we had a bloody big squad so he trimmed it right down and sold every striker we had. But that squad was a very good one on paper and a few wheeling and dealings we could still on paper still have a good squad? Now he has admittedly had some very very good signings but very many bad ones as well, but there again so did Malky , but he just haven't got the know how to take any team up, and he could manage another 700 games and I would guess he still never would gain a promotion.
