Cardiff defender Bruno Ecuele Manga has resumed training following a bout of malaria and could be involved for the Sky Bet Championship visit of relegated Bolton.

The Gabon centre-back was discharged from hospital earlier this week and might make the Bluebirds' bench after missing the last two games.

Cardiff will wait to asses the fitness of Fabio Da Silva who has been suffering from a groin injury, while Declan John could return to the matchday squad.

Kenneth Zohore scored his first goal for the Bluebirds last time out and could be given an opportunity in the front line on Saturday. Bruno Ecuele-Manga is another battling for a return following a virus.

Bolton Wanderers

Gary Madine will remain on the sidelines for Bolton with a long-term injury while Wellington Silva has hopes of returning before the end of the season. Dorian Devite has resumed full training following injury and looks likely to return to the matchday squad.

Bolton Wanderers Football Club is an English professional football club based in Bolton. The club currently competes in the Football League Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.

The club was formed as Christ Church Football Club in 1874, and adopted its current name in 1877. Founder members of the Football League in 1888, Bolton have spent the highest number of seasons of any club in the top flight without winning the title (the 2011–12 season was their 73rd, non-consecutive year in the top flight).[3] The closest they have come to the title is third in the First Division on three occasions (1891–92, 1920–21 and 1924–25). As of 2015, the club has spent more seasons in the top division than any other club outside the current Premier League.

Bolton were a successful cup side in the 1920s, winning the FA Cup three times. The club won the cup a fourth time in 1958. A leaner spell followed, reaching a nadir in 1987 when the club spent a season in the Fourth Division. The club regained top-flight status in 1995 after a 15-year absence. In a period of relative success, the club qualified for the UEFA Cup twice, reaching the last 32 in 2005–06 and the last 16 in 2007–08.

The club played at Burnden Park for 102 years from 1895. In 1997 it moved out of town to the Reebok Stadium, named after long-term club sponsor Reebok. The stadium was renamed the Macron Stadium in July 2014, to reflect the club's new deal with Italian sportswear company Macron.

We've scored four goals once all season, and although I am confident this will be a comfortable win for us, I don't think it will be by as much as some of the predictions on here. I am going for 3-1.

Sheffield Wednesday: Owls challenged to channel the spirit of Cardiff

By DOM HOWSON

Thursday 21 April 2016

Lee Bullen has called for Sheffield Wednesday to conjure up the spirit of Cardiff as they aim to end their 16-year top-flight exile.

Tuesday’s controversial home draw with MK Dons stretched the Owls’ winless streak to three matches.

Despite dropping two points, Carlos Carvalhal’s troops increased their advantage over seventh-placed Cardiff City to six with three fixtures remaining. Wednesday are effectively seven points better off than the Bluebirds due to their vastly superior goal difference in the race to secure a play-off place.

And Bullen, a key member of the Wednesday side who triumphed in the end of season knockout tournament in the Welsh capital 11 years ago, has challenged the present team to finish the regular campaign strongly.

For our Owls news and opinion on twitter follow here

“The overall season has been great for the supporters and they have really enjoyed the ride,” he told The Star. “But there is still a bit to do.

“We are looking forward to the last three games. There are no easy games in this league. Hopefully we will get ourselves into those play-offs.

“You want to be on a decent run of form going into the play-offs but I have been there as a player. We sneaked into the top-six and went on to get promoted.

“There is no winning formula but, if you gave me the choice, I would rather go in on a good run of form.”

For more news from Hillsborough click here

Although the team failed to beat the Dons, Bullen, who has hinted the Owls will recall Jeremy Helan from his loan stint at Wolves, is convinced they are heading in the right direction.

He said: “The confidence is there. The performance at Bristol City was disappointing but the last two have not been bad at all. We deserved to win both games and we haven’t got the breaks.”

The Scot has spoken of his delight over head coach Carlos Carvalhal extending his Owls stay on Monday.

“Carlos has been great this season,” said Bullen, who stood in for a ‘frustrated’ Carvalhal at the post-match press conference in midweek. “Joao Mario Oliveira, Bruno Lage, Jhony Conceicao and Andy Rhodes have also been excellent.

“I have found it really educating, interesting and different working with Carlos. It is a happy place to work. We have signed good players and got a good coaching staff. We are enjoying it and will enjoy the next few days in preparation for Derby.”

Striker George Hirst registered as Owls Under-21s claimed a 1-0 victory over Barnsley yesterday.

Confirmation of match officials for Saturday's trip to South Wales

Lee Collins will oversee Bolton Wanderers’ trip to Cardiff City on Saturday.

Predominantly running the rule over fixtures in League One and League Two throughout his career, the Surrey-based official took charge of his first Championship fixture in February 2012.

The man in the middle for one previous Wanderers outing, Mr Collins last controlled a Whites match in March 2013 when the Trotters won 3-2 away at Barnsley.

Matthew Buonassisi and Andrew Quin will run the line, while Andy Davies is the fourth official.

Here’s the message the Cardiff City boss wanted to give fans after a disappointing defeat:

We’re still in the fight and there could be another twist in the tail.
Stay with us, we’ll keep fighting and the one thing you never do is give up.
Realistically it’s a small chance, but whilst it’s a chance we shall keep plugging away,

Cardiff City Vs Bolton Wanderers: Match Preview

Thursday April 21, 2016 Jamie Kemble

Date and Time: Saturday 23rd April (15.00)

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium

Referee: Lee Collins

Cardiff host relegated Bolton Wanderers as they look to keep their very slim chance of making the play-offs alive going into a clash with play-off rivals Sheffield Wednesday next weekend.

Russell Slade’s Bluebirds will look to bounce back from three games without a win against rock-bottom Bolton Wanderers who have entertained the most miserable of seasons. Cardiff are all-but out of the play-off race but a win against Bolton would mean it remains mathematically possible for the Bluebirds to achieve a top six finish.

A loss against Brentford last time out means Cardiff will have to make up six points from three games, making it an incredibly difficult task, although manager Russell Slade has asked supporters to carry on believing going into the last three games.

Bolton will hope they can wipe this season from their memory as quick as possible with troubles off the field almost sinking the club all together before former player Dean Holdsworth and his consortium rescued the club from the brink.

While the wanderers managed to stay afloat off the field, there was no such happy ending on the field with Bolton’s relegation being confirmed with five games remaining. The Wanderer’s are a massive 21 points from safety with three games remaining.

Neil Lennon was in charge of the former Premier League club for the majority of the season but the former Celtic boss walked away, leaving caretaker manager Jimmy Phillips to finish the season in charge.

Last time out, Bolton took a point from Charlton Athletic at the Macron Stadium to relegate the Addicks to League One along with themselves. The goalless draw means the teams set up a date for next season in the third tier.

When Cardiff travelled to the Macron Stadium earlier in the season, they come away with three points in a dramatic affair with five goals. Anthony Pilkington scored the winner in an entertaining the 3-2 win over the Wanderers in December.

Cardiff face recently relegated Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, in the Bluebirds’ penultimate home fixture of the season.

Help us celebrate Foundation Day 2016 this weekend - with two free tickets for 2016/17 Season Ticket Holders!

THE OPPOSITION

Following a hugely disappointing season, Bolton Wanderers’ relegation was confirmed on April 9th with a 4-1 defeat at Derby County. The Trotters have struggled throughout the campaign, recording only four wins, and conceding the most goals out of all twenty-four teams. Caretaker boss Jimmy Phillips has been in charge of the side since March 15th, following the sacking of Neil Lennon.

A shining light in Bolton’s season has been hot prospect Zach Clough, who leads the Bolton goal-scoring charts, with six League strikes. Fellow striker Gary Madine has five, whilst Stephen Dobbie is on three. Defender Dean Moxey leads the way in terms of assists, with five.

Having been relegated to the third tier for the first time since 1993, Bolton will now be hoping to end this season on a positive note, before beginning the rebuilding process in hope of a speedy return to the Championship.

CLUB CONNECTIONS

A trio of Bluebirds featured for Bolton last season; with Kevin McNaughton, Joe Mason and Adam le Fondre playing at the Macron Stadium. Cardiff legend McNaughton spent the whole season with the Trotters, whilst Mason and le Fondre had half-season spells each.

Former player and current Goalkeeping Coach Martyn Margetson, who made 32 City appearances, had a loan spell at Bolton in 1994. While others, including Michael Ricketts, Heidar Helguson and Nathan Blake have also starred for both sides.

Manga could be set for shock return

Cardiff City’s Bruno Ecuele Manga could be poised for a dramatic comeback this weekend after battling a case of suspected malaria.

Cardiff City's Bruno Ecuele Manga could be set for shock comeback after malaria battle

Friday 22nd APR 2016

BY STEVE TUCKER

Manga spent time in hospital as he fought the virus but is in training and could yet play some part tomorrow

Cardiff City’s Bruno Ecuele Manga could be poised for a dramatic comeback this weekend after battling a case of suspected malaria.

The 27-year-old centre-half was hospitalised last week with an illness which the Bluebirds suspect was picked up when Manga returned to play for his native Gabon last month.

But boss Russell Slade, who sees his side fighting to hang onto their slim Championship play-off hopes, has received a boost with the news his defender seems to have made a remarkable recovery. Manga left hospital at the start of the week and is now back in training with his Bluebirds’ teammates.

Whether he will be in contention to play any part in Cardiff’s big clash with Bolton in the Welsh capital on Saturday remains to be seen.

But according to sources in the Cardiff camp, the signs do look promising.

Slade himself confirmed the player, who has missed Cardiff’s last two matches, had been suffering with a suspected case of malaria.

“It might be the case that he has malaria,” said Slade.

Read More: No Cardiff City player among the top 15 in the league according to Championship managers

“He is out of hospital and will be commencing training later this week. That is good news, having suffered a virus of that kind of capacity. We see it all at Cardiff City.”

Slade is currently using the centre-half partnership that served him so well at the start of the season in Sean Morrison and Matthew Connolly.

Ben Turner, who has suffered injury woes of his own, has been on the bench but if Manga’s recovery continues he could well find himself amongst the substitutes for the visit of rock-bottom Bolton.

Phillips to mix Wanderers' youth and experience in first team shake-up at Cardiff

RESHUFFLE: Jimmy Phillips is planning to pick a youthful team at Cardiff

By Marc Iles, chief football writer

Saturday 23rd April 2016

JIMMY Phillips is set to leave some senior stars behind for today’s trip to Cardiff City and crack on with the kids.

Dean Moxey and Liam Trotter are among the first teamers who could be shelved as the interim boss names a youthful squad for the penultimate away game of the season.

Emile Heskey and David Wheater will keep their place in the side, however, with Phillips insisting their experience is having a positive effect on some of the academy graduates.

“They have really helped the younger players, particularly David at centre-half who has brought Rob Holding along,” he told The Bolton News.

“We tried a couple of games with Kaiyne Woolery up front and he is one for the future, he has great pace but he’s still learning the game. He isn’t long out of non-league.

“Emile holds the ball up and allows us to get out of defence, that’s the reason why he’s played.

“We have experimented with different formations and styles but we feel at this moment in time Emile is the man to play up front with Kaiyne coming on once the game has opened up a bit.

“In the last two games he’s had opportunities one-on-one where he had a chance to use his pace but for one reason or another has not got his shot away.

“It looked like a dream opportunity but he’s learning, working hard on his game, and he will be an asset in the future.”
