Brentford Vs Cardiff City: Match Preview
April 18, 2016

By Jamie Kemble

Brentford, Cardiff City, Dean Smith, Griffin Park, Russell Slade, Sky Bet Championship

Date and Time: Tuesday 19th April

Venue: Griffin Park

Referee: Stuart Attwell

Cardiff travel to Griffin Park to face Brentford in search of three points as they desperately attempt to make up ground on sixth placed Sheffield Wednesday who are five points in-front with four games remaining.

Russell Slade’s men will need to get back to winning ways on Tuesday evening if they hold any hopes of making the top six. The Bluebirds are currently win-less in their last three games with two draws and a loss, last time out, QPR held Cardiff to a goalless draw at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Brentford have entertained a disappointing season following play-off semi-final defeat last season and the subsequent parting of ways with manager Mark Warburton. Warburton’s replacement, Marinus Dijkhuizen lasted less than two months of the season in the job and was replaced by former Walsall manager Dean Smith.

Since Dean Smith’s appointment, Brentford have steadily improved on their sluggish start and they now find themselves in thirteenth with a real chance of obtaining a top-half finish.

Last time out, Brentford took a point at home against Bristol City thanks to Scott Hogan’s stoppage time leveler. Hogan has had a tricky start to his Bees career with two long-term injuries keeping him out for the majority of his Brentford career.

Going into the Bristol City fixture, Brentford had won all three of their previous matches, meaning they’re currently unbeaten in four games. Cardiff will have to keep a close eye on Brentford striker Lasse Vibe, the Dane has scored 12 goals since arriving in the summer.

When Cardiff hosted Brentford earlier in the season, they spurned a two goal lead, allowing Brentford back into the clash but Kenwyne Jones managed to re-gain the lead late-on to seal all three points for Russell Slade’s men.

The Bluebirds will have fond memories of Griffin Park after beating the play-off-bound Bees 2-1 last season despite finishing the clash with just nine men. Cardiff have lost just once in their last five attempts against Brentford.

Cardiff’s rivals for the last play-off spot, Sheffield Wednesday, are home on Tuesday evening with MK Dons making the trip up North to Hillsbrough. The Dons are all-but relegated from the Championship but Cardiff will be hoping they can pull off a surprise upset in Sheffield.
