HASSELBAINK RETURNS TO FACE CARDIFF WITH RESURGENT QPR

APRIL 14 2016

By JAMIE KEMBLE

As former Bluebird Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink prepares to return to Cardiff as manager of QPR, we take a look back on his time in South Wales.

Hasselbaink has gone on to have a successful start in management, beginning with a spell at Dutch side Royal Antwerp before going on to have a successful promotion campaign with Burton Albion which secured him a job as QPR boss earlier this season.

The Chelsea legend has recovered Rangers’ season in many ways, inspiring them to what’s set to be a top-half finish despite the London-based club entertaining a poor start under former boss Chris Ramsay.

Hasselbaink enjoyed a fantastic career, playing for a range of clubs – from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid and even Cardiff City while also making 23 appearances for his country, Netherlands. The powerful striker managed a more than respectable 197 goals in 468 league games during his 18-year playing career which spanned from 1990 to 2008.

Jimmy Floyd’s time with the Bluebirds

It was hard to believe at the time but the legendary striker signed for Cardiff City in 2007 on a free transfer following a short spell with Charlton. Hasselbaink joined former internationals Trevor Sinclair and Robbie Fowler at Ninian Park as then manager of Cardiff Dave Jones made the most of the free agents available.

While fellow experienced striker Robbie Fowler may not have lived up to the billing due to injury, Hasselbaink did with a respectable 36 league appearances and he even managed seven-league goals in that time.

During his time with the Bluebirds, Hasselbaink managed to net a few fantastic goals and three in particular stood out as the years rolled back for the former Dutch international. An accurate strike from outside the box at home to Watford stands out but that was topped by a stunning effort on the road against West Brom in a 4-2 League Cup win.

The pick of the bunch, however, is a goal that stands out in every Cardiff City supporters’ mind from the last ten years or so. The goal arrived during the famous FA Cup run and it was a fifth round tie at home to Wolves. Hasselbaink rolled back the years with a classy step-over and followed it up with a driven strike into the top left stanchion.

During his time in South Wales, the former Leeds striker was hardly the goal-scoring machine he once was but in his defence he was 35-years-old. Despite his age, he played a vital role in Cardiff’s season with some superb hold-up play and some even better goals.

One thing’s for sure, Hasselbaink was a very worthwhile signing in 2007 and when he put pen-to-paper at Ninian Park, he certainly didn’t expect to be playing his final match as a player in an FA Cup final in front of a record Wembley crowd in excess of 89,000. Courtesy of Cardiff City it was a fine way to see out a fantastic careeR.

I've never forgiven him for walking around the field for 90 minutes in the FA cup final and not giving a f**k. . The biggest day for many a year for our supporters and he didn't even try .. Wanker !!!!!
