Sheffield Wednesday: Hillsborough double would secure play-off spot says Pudil

Sheffield Star

Wednesday 13 April 2016

Daniel Pudil is confident victory over Ipswich Town and Cardiff City at Hillsborough will secure Sheffield Wednesday a top six spot in the Championship.

Wednesday have a five point lead over seventh placed Cardiff and are a further three points ahead of Ipswich, who visit S6 on Saturday.

Pudil said victory in each of those two home games is vital and is confident that will be enough to fend off the challenge of the chasing pack.

“We know we have still got Ipswich and Cardiff to play at home,” the left back said. “Those games will be really important to win.

“If we win both of them, we will be 100 per cent in the play-offs.”

As they prepare to welcome Mick McCarthy’s side on Saturday, Wednesday are looking to bounce back from last weekend’s horror show at struggling Bristol City.

Czech Republic international Pudil insists Wednesday’s players always have each others’ backs and has backed them to stick together.

He said: “We have a good, strong squad and everyone is working hard for each other.

“We are playing together. Even if someone makes a mistake, we know someone else will help them out.

“We have backed each other up.”

Both Cardiff and Ipswich failed to take advantage of the slip as they were beaten by Fulham and Brentford respectively.

He's probably right.

He's wrong. It's not 100% at all as we could still get 12 points from our other games.
Cricketers have been known to use Ill-thought quotes from the opposition as motivation and it's backfired.

Come on City.

He's just putting more pressure on these two games for his team. Not sure weather that's a good thing after taking a 4-1 drumming at Bristol shitty!

Personally I think if they lose against Ipswich (who will want the points) and also Derby I think they could find themselves in a spot of bother.

We might be 5 points behind but I am comfortable with that. I think they will lose to Derby. They will lose against us. And if they lose against Ipswich we could find ourselves ahead of them.

If we pick the right team and play the way we did against Brighton who knows

This is where the top managers succeed.

Okeefe and Whitts key players from now on

I don't think I said Sheff Wed were f**ked.

I think I was pointing out that whilst they are 5 points ahead of us the big game is when we play them. If they win that then I think it will be all over but if we work on the basis that we win it we are only 2 points behind with 4 other games to consider. Derby and Ipswich won't be easy for Sheffield - and with us to play QPR home and Brentford I still think this is in our hands and capabilities

agree with you - Derby will beat them and we are more than capable of doing so too, and then its in our hands

Whilst you are right in theory, we still have to match Sheffield Wed results up until the penultimate game of the season to still be in with a chance to go into the playoffs, we could be going to Sheffield Wed and we could already be out of it

Agreed but it's Sheffields to lose. I think the pressure is on them.

Ipswich will not be easy for them. Due to our history I don't think QPR will be easy for us but I can see us gaining some ground.

Derby will be difficult for Wednesday. We play Bolton, and whilst nothing is guaranteed, I see this as another opportunity to make up ground.

If truth be told my biggest worry is that we will beat Sheffield and then lose to Brum last game of the season!

I wouldn't be a bluebird if this post was too positive though!

My biggest worry is Bolton we always struggle against bottom sides
