Leicester City have agreed a deal worth £1million for Fleetwood Town striker Jamie Vardy.

Jamie Vardy is on his way to Leicester

CARDIFF CITY have missed out on signing Fleetwood Town striker Jamie Vardy despite having a £1 million bid accepted, WalesOnline understands.

Vardy is now set to join the Bluebirds' Championship rivals Leicester City after agreeing terms with the Foxes.

Malky Mackay is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of next season despite the club still being surrounded by financial uncertainty following the decision to scrap re-branding plans that could have seen Cardiff's Malaysian investors pump £100 million into the club.

A board meeting earlier this week brought no definitive decision on the club's future path, with the prospect of seeking new investors still being mooted.

Mackay is closing in on Peterborough United goalkeeper Joe Lewis as his first signing of the summer, as he bids to build a team capable of challenging for Premier League promotion once again after play-off defeat to West Ham this season.

Vardy, who scored 31 goals in 36 appearances for the Conference champions this season, has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks.

But he has now made his decision, arriving at the Walkers Stadium for a medical on Thursday. The initial £1 million fee could rise to £1.7 million with add-ons.

The 25-year-old only joined Fleetwood last season from Halifax Town. Before that he played over 100 games for Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Cornelius was the wiser choice anyway.
