Liverpool supporters have been warned they will be prosecuted if they use any pyrotechnics during Thursday night’s Europa League quarter-final first leg with Borussia Dortmund.

The Reds were hit with five charges by UEFA after the previous round against Manchester United, one of which was related to the setting off of fireworks.

Dortmund Police have issued an open letter to the 3,500 Liverpool fans travelling to Germany – making it clear that no repeat will be tolerated at the Westfalenstadion. It reads: “Dear friends and supporters of Liverpool FC.

“The police department of Dortmund warmly welcomes you to the upcoming UEFA European match.

“We expressly welcome football enthusiasts and peaceful supporters as well as other visitors to the city of Dortmund.

Pyro warning to fans

“We are aware that supporting the team is an important part of the match. Nevertheless we would like to inform you that the carrying and burning of flares, smoke bombs, sparklers, fireworks or any other non-approved pyrotechnics is prohibited inside of the stadium as well as in public areas. Any violation will lead to legal consequences and will be punished.

“The police of Dortmund do not condone misbehaviour of any kind and will exclude those supporters from the match.

“Therefore please do not use any kind of fireworks or pyrotechnics at any time during your stay in Dortmund. You endanger yourself and others!

“Furthermore we would like to point out that any kind of physical altercation may be as well a reason for denial of entry into the stadium or ejection from the stadium, revocation of tickets without refund and/ or arrest and prosecution.”

Dortmund Police have also issued travel advice for supporters planning their journey to the stadium if you are travelling to Germany.

“Travel by bus: Supporters arriving by bus are asked to use the parking place Parkplatz E3, Victor-Toyka-Straße, Dortmund. The walking distance to the stadium is a few hundred metres.

“Travel by train: Supporters arriving by train are asked to use the subway U 45 from Hauptbahnhof to Westfalenhallen and continue to the stadium on foot. Travel from city centre: Supporters who decide to spend the afternoon in the city centre (Alter Markt) are asked to use the subway line U45 from Stadtgarten to Westfalenhallen and continue to the stadium on foot.

“Please take care to arrive latest 7pm in the vicinity of the stadium to avoid missing the kick off. Queues in front of the stadium can be quite long and cause delays.
