Cardiff City winger Matthew Kennedy returns early from Port Vale loan spell as first team opportunities dry up

Thursday 7th April 2016

BY MATTHEW SOUTHCOMBE

Kennedy joined the League One club in January and, after making a good impression in his opening games, has found himself confined to the bench in recent times

Matthew Kennedy has returned to Cardiff City just under three weeks before his loan spell at Port Vale was due to end.

The 21-year-old joined the Valiants in the January transfer window and his impressive early performances lead to the League One club securing a two-month extension.

His current deal was supposed to come to an end on April 26, but the games have dried up and he will return to South Wales with immediate effect.

Port Vale boss Rob Page suggested that Kennedy struggled with the hectic nature of the League One schedule and his form suffered as a result.

Comment: Cardiff City mustn't rest on their laurels... The feel-good factor can disappear as quickly as it emerged

“To go from under-21s football to playing week-in, week-out, two games a week at League One level caught up with him," said Page.

“His form dipped a little bit and Cardiff have decided to call him back because he’s not playing so we’ve got to respect that and we wish him all the best for the future.

"I think Matty came in and did really well at the start.

"Then he played Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday and inevitably it was going to catch up with him and that’s what happened."

Kennedy played 12 times for Port Vale since making his debut against Doncaster on January 26.

A young player that has spent too much time playing reserve friendlies in his career to date, and this is the end product of that system.

I'm not backing him up here ,but port vale should have looked after him just a little bit better
They would have been able to see from their sport science department that he was struggling with two games a week if that was the problem

These youngsters do need handling a wee bit ,once they get into the first team

On the other hand IMO he does have an attitude problem

FFS he's 21 years old, should be about as fit as he ever going to be and he can't cope with playing 2x90 minute games a week????

This guy is a talented player but bombed out by Everton, doesn't figure at all for us then can't get into a poor Div1 team...sounds like he is wasting his career

Another player that posters on here were going crazy as he wasn't playing, I have to admit I wanted him to be given a chance. But looking at things now maybe our manager ain't as clueless as he was made out. Most sent out have failed miserably. There is a reason why they were shipped out. :bluescarf:

Cunts 21 on mega bucks and got a bad attitude. He doesn't need a hug he needs a slap in the face and sort his act out!

Hopefully a team up in Scotland can take him off our hands as he tends to head there a lot of the time, of course to see his family but must take it's toll on him considering where Cardiff and Port Vale are based. Slade made the right call on this one. I don't think Kennedy was a Slade signing in all honesty, a signing of the committee. Maybe we were offered McAleny but they have the same agent or Everton tried to get two out?

Playing under 21 football is destroying most of the young talented players they dont improve playing age grade football, they need to play in reserve teams with experienced players to learn from not there own age group.

How many of these guys perform good enough to break into first teams ? I dont think its many.

You know it.

Kennedy will come good, from what I can see people assume he is a bad apple because of a tweet which IMO he was spot on about and then they pretend they are in no because he is a "bad one". If he is out if shape then thats down to us potentially. Every time I've see him he has looked a good player, have we developed that? No?

If he's out of shape it's his fault ffs! The rest of our players look fit. And no way should players be blurting out complaints on social media he gets alot of money not just to play but to act like a professional.

Joe Ralls seems to off benefitted ok from loans and reserve matches. Maybe he has 2 things more going for him! Talent and Commitment
