Arsenal, Leicester City and Chelsea deny doping allegations

The news appeared in "The Sunday Times"

Premier League clubs Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City have denied doping allegations made in The Sunday Times, the English newspaper printing a London doctor's testimony which included prescribing illicit substances to several elite athletes and football players in the UK.

Arsenal said in a statement that they were "deeply disappointed" by the publication of the allegations, which they said were "entirely without foundation".London rivals Chelsea agreed that the allegations were "false and completely baseless" and added that they have "never used the services of Dr Bonar and have no knowledge or record of any of our players having been treated by him or using his services.

"Leicester, like their Premier League competitors, said that "We are extremely disappointed that The Sunday Times has published unsubstantiated allegations referring to players from clubs including Leicester City when, on its own admission, it has insufficient evidence to support the claims.

"Birmingham City, who play in the Championship, noted "The club have not used the services of Mark Bonar and has no knowledge or record of any of our players, past or present, doing so."

The British government today called for an urgent investigation by the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) to see how they handled allegations received in 2014 against Dr. Mark Bonar, who allegedly prescribed illicit drugs to players and other athletes from this country. The Sunday Times has released a video in which Bonar, who works at a private clinic in London and is not licensed by the British Medical Council thus ensuring that he is not in the British medical records, apparently acknowledges having prescribed banned drugs to about 150 athletes to improve their performance.

UKAD has admitted that between April and May 2014 they received a complaint against the doctor but dismissed the case concluding that he was not under their jurisdiction as he was not governed by a sport. In the video, made covertly by an athlete in collaboration with the newspaper, and over several visits, the doctor makes 38 separate claims to have prescribed substances to improve the performance of cyclists, tennis players, a cricketer, a champion of boxing and football players from the Premier League.

Bonar reveals he has treated players from Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester City and Birmingham City, who in turn have denied any involvement. The Sunday Times has not identified any of the athletes allegedly involved and clarified that the claims have not been corroborated by other sources.

The FA supports research The English Football Association (FA) agreed today to support the investigation of alleged doping in British sport after "The Sunday Times" published the allegations, which affects several players."These are very serious allegations. As such, The FA welcomes UK Anti-Doping's decision to immediately launch an independent review into the matters raised by the Sunday Times," they said in a statement."The FA is fully committed to maintaining the integrity of English football and will work with Ukad and other relevant agencies in seeking to do so. The FA urges anyone with information that may be relevant to come forward as soon as possible."
