Earlier in the season it looked like the veteran's influence may be on the wane, but his comeback in a free role off the left has been superb.
He is the player that makes this new system tick, drifting in off the left to support the central midfielders or pinging in deadly crosses from deep.
Added to that is his demon left boot, which remains one of the most threatening from set-pieces in the division.
A calf strain picked up in the Ipswich win gave Lawrence the chance to play in this position against Reading, but it would be a major surprise if Slade did not recall the 31-year-old for the critical clash with Derby County.
Whittingham is ready to return and fight for his place.
