Cardiff City confident that Anthony Pilkington can recover from injury in time for Derby County clash

Pilkington misses tonight's Ireland friendly with Switzerland as he nurses a long-term knee injury

Friday 25th March 2016

Cardiff City are expecting frontman Anthony Pilkington to be fit for their crunch Championship clash with Derby.

Pilkington has been pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad for tonight’s friendly with Switzerland with a knee problem. Irish medical staff have described it as an on-going injury, which has required different training for Pilkington to that of his international teammates.

Despite the problem, the Republic are hoping Pilkington might be OK to play for Martin O’Neill’s side in their next friendly clash with Slovakia on Tuesday.

The news of Pilkington’s injury started to ring alarm bells in the Bluebirds’ camp, with manager Russell Slade and his men now facing eight big games during which to try to grab themselves a Championship play-off place. That starts with the arrival of Derby in the Welsh capital on April 2 with the Rams currently in fifth, two places and five points ahead of the Bluebirds.

The loss of Pilkington would be a big blow for Slade, with the 27-year-old having become one of the Bluebirds’ main goal threats.

Slade and his staff are now monitoring Pilkington’s situation in the Irish squad, but sources have confirmed to WalesOnline they believe the player will be fit for the Derby game whether he plays for the Republic on Tuesday or not.

Since being moved up-front from the wing, Pilkington has found the net regularly for the Bluebirds and now has eight goals for the entire campaign.

Since losing the likes of Kenwyne Jones and Joe Mason, Slade has seen his options limited when it comes to frontmen.

Rest him and give saadi a chance, saadi could be more equiped to fire us to promotion than pilkington, everyone is acting like pilkington is the saviour and our promotion hopes depend on him but i dont agree with that personally..

Whos good on stats? Whats pilkingtons goals to games ratio as a striker excluding those 2 penalties? And how many games has it been now since pilkington scored a goal from open play?

He's not been doing much in the reserves so I wouldn't pin your hopes on him lighting the first team on fire.

Exactly, he's hardly played. Might be fitness, might be attitude, might be performance. If he's not smashing the reserves, he's not ready for the pressure and intensity of our season close-out.
