" Ben Davies: Wales defender hoping to be fit to face Ukraine "

25/03/16

Ben Davies expects to be fit to face Ukraine on Monday in Wales' penultimate friendly before Euro 2016.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender suffered a head injury in their Europa League loss to Borussia Dortmund on 17 March.

After watching Wales' 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland, Davies said: "I should be fit enough now. I've done a lot of work this week without any problems.

"So hopefully I'll be able to get a run-out in the game on Monday."

Davies' former Swansea City colleague Neil Taylor also missed the draw with Northern Ireland at Cardiff City Stadium while forward Hal Robson-Kanu has been ruled out of both Wales' March warm-up games.

Forward Gareth Bale has been left out of the squad in a joint decision between the Football Association of Wales and his club, Real Madrid.

Wales are also without Aaron Ramsey, James Collins, Andy King and David Edwards through injury and illness.

Another left-back option, Newcastle's Paul Dummett, was not named in the original squad after suffering a setback in his return from a hamstring injury.

Walsall forward Tom Bradshaw also missed the game with Northern Ireland through injury, but could be fit to face Ukraine.

Ukraine 'a good test'

Davies added: "These games are very important. There's a lot of places in the squad up for grabs.

"I think some boys staked a very good claim. There were some good performances from the boys that came on and these are games where you have to show what you can do.

"Ukraine is a good test for us. They're a top team and we're aware of what they can bring to the game."

Wales finish their preparations against Sweden on 5 June, before their Euro 2016 campaign in France starts against Slovakia six days later.
