Euro ban for Cardiff City fan caught with a flare
Area: Bridgend, Cardiff

Thursday, March 24th, 2016

A Pencoed man has been made subject of a football banning order following an incident at a Cardiff City away game.

Ben Treharne was given a five-year banning order after admitting being in a possession of a flare before the MK Dons v Cardiff City game on December 26, 2015.
After receiving a caution for the offence, the 19-year-old was banned from attending any football matches in the UK which are regulated under the Football Spectators Act 1989.
He must also surrender his passport between May 31 and July 10 and every time Wales play abroad.

Pc Christian Evans, from South Wales Police who investigated the incident, said: “As a result of his irresponsible and disruptive behaviour Ben Treharne will miss out on the opportunity of seeing Wales play in the forthcoming Euro 2016 tournament in France.”

Footage (pictured) showed Treharne with blue flare in the away end concourse prior to kick-off in the Boxing Day fixture. South Wales Police applied for the Banning Order following this and a number of previous incidents at football matches.

Pc Evans added: “The overwhelming majority of Cardiff City fans are well-behaved and passionate about their team.
“We hope this case serves as a reminder to people that it is illegal to be in possession of pyrotechnics at UK football matches and also generally throughout Europe.”

Breaching a Football Banning Order can result in a fine or a prison sentence of up to six months.

Yet if he was in Italy, Greece, turkey, Poland, Germany or France and done that. He'd be going. Not sticking up for the boy but why isn't it a problem abroad?

I do wish this country wasn't so strict. It's suffocating at times
