Worry for Cardiff City as Anthony Pilkington ruled out of friendly with knee injury that could cost him place at Euro 2016

Friday 24th March 2016

The Bluebirds' striker will remain with the national squad in the hope that he can feature against Slovakia on Tuesday night

Anthony Pilkington has become an injury concern for Cardiff City after Martin O'Neill confirmed he would miss the Republic of Ireland's friendly with Switzerland tonight.

Pilkington has been unable to train with his international team-mates over the last few days, with O'Neill confirming it is a consequence of long-term injury problems with his knee.

The Irishman requires a tailored training regime to manage the problem.

Pilkington will remain with the squad in the hope that he can recover in time for Tuesday night's game with Slovakia, but O'Neill has conceded that the issues cost the Cardiff man a place in his Euro 2016 squad.

With Jonathan Walters injured, Pilkington would have been hoping to impress and stake his claim.

It will leave the Bluebirds' desperately sweating over the fitness of a man who has become absolutely integral to Russell Slade's plans in recent months, scoring five goals since moving to a striker berth in the 3-1 win over Wolves.

Cardiff's other striking options are limited, with Idriss Saadi having precious little first team football since returning from a long-term injury, and Kenneth Zohore only playing 32 minutes since arriving on loan.

The Bluebirds' face a crucial run of fixtures from next Saturday, taking on promotion challengers Derby and Burnley in the space of four days.

They will desperately be hoping that Pilkington is fit and firing by then.

Funny how players with clubs in challenging league positions seem to develop injuries when the friendly internationals come around. Good to see Pilks is prioritising Cardiff over Ireland ;)

I would give Saadi a go up front to rest Pilks...

Very worrying Mason if Pilkington does not recover asap.
