David Marshall out of Scotland squad as it's revealed he's battling pneumonia:

The 31-year-old missed the Bluebirds’ last two Championship and the Cardiff camp are waiting to discover if the goalkeeper will even be fit to face Derby on April 2

Tuesday March 22nd 2016

Cardiff City skipper, David Marshall, is battling pneumonia and has pulled out of the Scottish international squad for their up-coming friendlies

The 31-year-old missed the Bluebirds’ last two Championship outings after falling ill and the Cardiff camp are still waiting to discover if the goalkeeper will even be fit for his side’s next game, a crunch Championship clash with Derby in the Welsh capital following the international break on April 2.

There has been great concern within the club about Marshall’s condition, but he is being closely monitored by Bluebirds’ medical staff, including club doctor Len Noakes, and the Scot is said to be making progress.

Bluebirds’ boss Russell Slade said the most important thing right now was to focus on getting Marshall well once more and he revealed it was the first time the club’s medical team had dealt with a player going down with pneumonia. Indeed Slade himself said he could not recall having to deal with a similar situation in all his days as a manager.

“Obviously David has been feeling very low, he’s been very weak as you would be, but we are monitoring the situation very closely,” said Slade.

“I’m pleased to say that he is getting better, his condition is improving and, my staff tell me, he is responding to the antibiotics he’s taking to treat it. My doctor here said he’s never treated a player with pneumonia before and I’m scratching me head to think of it too.

“But the most important thing to say is that David is on the mend and he is looking good.”

Despite the shot-stopper’s improvement it is still unclear whether he will be ready for the next clash with play-off rivals the Rams.

Kind of a dumb question but is it really going to be that long?
bloody hell that would be a disaster.

I could be very wrong mate but I would be surprised if he does if he has actualy got Pneumonia and not just a bad chest infection.

There is only a month or so of the season to go, two of our games are Tuesday Night Away games in probably freezing cold.

I would say the Club would have a duty of care to him and that it would be irresponsible to play him so soon without a proper chance of recovery.

Not a Dr mind so happy to stand corrected if its a mild case and hes already had it for the past few weeks he could well come back I suppose.

Having had pneumonia before, I think it would be safe to say the season is over for him.

I spent 9 days in hospital when I had it and barely felt normal again for around 6 weeks after, let along compete on a professional sporting basis!

At best we get the last few games of the season from him...depends on the severity I guess.

In my youth, pneumonia was a killer. Going back a while, I know, but it really was that serious. Thankfully, things gave moved on since then. The main thing is that David Marshall gets well again. We can think of him playing again after that. Best wishes, hope he's on the mend before too long.

Cheers
A bleak picture then, shame.
Apparently they will know more tomorrow. Fingers crossed he will be fit soon.

It all depends how severe the pneumonia is, if it is a mild case, then he could be out for a shorter time, he is responding to treatment and is getting better, so I would guess that it is mild

Whether he's out for a week or six months the important thing he recovers in his own time.

Football should always come 2nd to someone's health and well being.

Get well soon :bluescarf:

Hope for a speedy and thorough recovery for him.

No chance he'll play again this season. Moore will do just fine anyway.

Might help keep him off the radar of other teams, too.

It really does depend on the severity of the illness.A touch of pneumonia is fairly routine to treat but left unchecked and untreated can strike someone down.

It also depends on the health and fitness of the person. In Marshalls case, that's to his favour. There are different degrees to pneumonia.

I had a bout of virile pneumonia and it knocked me sideways and was told I could not work and needed complete rest and warmth.

He is a professional footballer and with the levels of fitness he needs, I'd be surprised if he was back this season.

Hope he gets better soon, his health is more important to him and his family than us.

Your right.
I will just look at positively and see it as a good practice for Moore. I see him as good potentially but needs game time.
Get well soon Marshy

Bloody hell its only the goalkeeper! Moore is as good as most Championship keepers and if he has to play for the rest of the season then I'm not worried at all. It would be more important if we lost 2 centre halves or another full back, or if Ralls or Immers got injured. The headline for this post is way over the top.

"Virile" pneumonia? The mind boggles! I assume you meant "viral" but it made me chuckle!

Big loss, especially at the business end of the season. Moore time then now. :bluebird: :bluebird:

He's a good deputy keeper to have :bluescarf:

Marshall has been consistently our best player for many seasons. I think you underestimate the role of a goalkeeper and in this case, a proven member of the backbone of our squad. Marshall was one of the key factors in our promotion pushes and deservedly won respect in his PL performances. It is indeed very bad news for us and the headline for this thread is spot on. Moore will develop into a great GK but in this current promotion push and given it maybe down to the wire, Marshall's absence could well be the difference.
