Ipswich front-man Luke Varney claims atmosphere was non-existent despite victorious Bluebirds pushing for play-offs and crowd topping 15,000.

Ipswich Town striker Luke Varney has labelled the atmosphere at Cardiff City Stadium as being "like a morgue."

The 33-year-old came on 15 minutes from the end in the Welsh capital on Saturday as Russell Slade's Bluebirds beat the visitors 1-0 thanks to a goal from defender Bruno Manga.

But Varney told the East Anglian Daily Times he was amazed that a side like Cardiff, pushing for the Championship play-offs, should attract so few supporters.

He said he was left wondering whether the fact Wales were playing England in the Six Nations at the same time had something to do with the empty stands.

The official attendance for the crunch clash was 15,175, actually up on numbers attending Cardiff home games earlier in the campaign.

But Varney, who is yet to find the net for his side in 15 appearances this season, said he was surprised how quiet the Bluebirds’ supporters were.

He even compared the Bluebirds fans to those at rock-bottom Bolton, the side he and his team-mates had travelled to before visiting Cardiff.

Varney's comments will raise plenty of eyebrows amongst Cardiff fans. It is widely accepted the atmosphere has been much better in the last two games against Ipswich and Leeds, with many saying the supporters have re-united with the team.

However, ahead of Ipswich's Portman Road clash with Blackburn, Varney was quoted as saying in his local newspaper: "It would be nice to have some atmosphere because the last two games at Bolton and Cardiff have been dead.

“It was like a morgue on each occasion. Bolton are in a difficult position on and off the pitch, but Cardiff also felt flat and they are pushing for the play-offs.

“It was a weird one because there were so few fans. People were saying it was because of the rugby, which I found a bit surprising.

“But as the away team we were quite happy with that in the first half, although we conceded the goal. I quite enjoy it when the away crowd are giving you a bit of stick because it gees you up a little bit.”

Varney said that he would be glad to be playing in front of his own fans again at Portman Road and stated he was disappointed Ipswich did not quieten the Cardiff crowd down even more.

“There are no problem at our own place so it will be good to be back at Portman Road under the lights with a great atmosphere and hopefully we will get the results we want,” said Varney.

“The aim in most away games is to quieten their crowd and I don’t think we did enough at Cardiff. We didn’t have a lot to do to make it happen either.”

Well we've been to every game (more or less) this season and last season and the atmosphere now in the last few games is the best it's been since we were in the premier league and that is a fact! Yes the crowds are smaller now on average but the noise from existing fans have done us proud over the last few games. It's improved but I'll agree that it still has some way to go. He should have Heard what the atmosphere was like at the Leeds game - that was something! And of course Portman road the roofs are lower and it's of an old type stadium that holds the sounds so yes it probably sounds louder to him at home! To say it is like a morgue is very harsh but I do think that it has a way to go to become electric/bouncing!

I think it's the English league in general. Watching match of the day now is nothing like it was 20 years or so back, the noise levels and atmosphere were completely different then. I've seen better at Ninian Park with 5,000 fans than I experienced for the Ipswich game. A lot of traditional supporters have been priced out of the game (including some of my friends and family), and if the whole of the match day experience costs continue to rise, I can only see things getting worse. Used to take my children down to every home game, and a few away games as well. Not sure I could afford it now at todays prices.

I saw a game from Middlesborough last week which was also,sparsely populated despite their high position in the league. Saturday was a no nonsense win and we gave the opposition little chance of a comeback. Reminiscent of the pragmatic football played when Malky was in charge. Let's face it - that was hardly exciting edge of the seat stuff. No wonder the crowd was quiet. It's the business end of the season where results are more important than entertainment.

It great that even opposing players are critical, maybe the club will get its head out of its arse and look at it seriously. They don't seem to want to take their own supporters word for it, so maybe outsiders, airing their views will help them wake up and smell the coffee

£32.50-£35 they're charging for Blackburn fans tonight. Absolutely disgusting, perhaps Varney whilst you sit on no goals this season on your obscene wages that you're robbing. You can be part of the solution, not part of the problem. He's a bitter twisted little man who has achieved nothing in his career.

Strange how none of the Leeds players, ( to my knowledge), felt it necessary to slag off our support last Tuesday. But then, they beat us.

Also to be fair to Ipswich they took over a 1k to us last Saturday and we barely took 200 to Portman Road, they also have a higher average attendance than us by 5k. Whether or not the atmosphere is shit at Portman road they have better support than us in terms of numbers home and away.
