Etien Velikonja was an odd signing in the end because no one really knows (a) whether he actually was good enough, and (b) what he did wrong. We may never know!

MARCH 14, 2016 By JAMIE KEMBLE
Cardiff could lose over a million pounds on striker Etien Velikonja with no return if he leaves on a free or if he is released at the end of his contract in the summer. The Slovenian joined the club for around £1.5 million in 2012 from home-country club Maribor but has just five appearances for the South Wales club.
Velikonja has just a few months left of his contract at Cardiff City and he will spend those months at Belgian club Lierse S.K where he is currently enjoying a fruitful spell. In his four years with Cardiff City he has played just five times in competitive fixtures.
Velikonja made his breakthrough as a professional at Gorica where he scored 32 times in 104 league games before moving to Maribor where he scored an impressive 20 goals in 48 league appearances. He also represented Maribor in the Europa League, scoring once in four outings.
The Slovenian international is enjoying a good spell during his second term at Belgian second tier club Lierse S.K, scoring an impressive 19 goals in 23 games. Lierse may opt to take Velikonja on a full-time basis but Cardiff are likely to allow the striker leave for a nominal fee.
During his time in South Wales, Velikonja has also spent time at Portuguese outfit Rio Ave where he only made a small number of appearances.
Velikonja’s five appearances for Cardiff City were; away at Port Vale in the cup last season, away to Macclesfield Town in the FA Cup during the 2012/13 season and also away to Hull City, Bristol City and Brighton away during that season in the league.
Malky Mackay was in charge when Velikonja arrived at the Cardiff City Stadium but many suggested he was a signing made by the owner Vincent Tan. Velikonja’s four-year deal comes to an end this year and it will likely mean that Cardiff paid £1.5 million for three league appearances and not a single goal.
The 27-year-old has featured heavily for the development side during his time at Cardiff City but rarely broke through under any manager. He memorably missed a sitter in a goalless draw away to Brighton during the promotion season but once won club goal of the month for his spectacular bicycle kick in a development fixture.
This piece of business is likely to go down as one of the worst pieces of business done by Cardiff City in a period where there were a large number of bad deals.
In the summer, Cardiff fans will most likely say goodbye to a striker who has never played a senior competitive fixture at Cardiff City Stadium in his four years at the club.

Tan has made so many appalling decisions including the Red Elephant stand, rebrand, appointing his relative head of recruitment etc. One day, maybe, we'll have decent owners....ourselves, the fans.
