' Cardiff is not a football City '

Sat Mar 12, 2016 6:47 pm

I see a lot of moaning about attendances today due to the rugby which highlights to me the massive popularity rugby has in the City. It's always been that way and if we only had Cardiff based fans in the stadium we'd be averaging 5k, a Cardiff accent is a rarity down the CCS at times. If it wasn't for the support from the Valleys we'd be fucked.

We need to convert the egg fans to supporting Cardiff, may take a generation of prolonged success for us and a sharp decline in the results of the Welsh rugby team.

They are only interested in internationals though club rugby is dead. Wales being a force at international level in football might help but I doubt it.

How many passionate, patriotic Welshmen at the rugby today hating the English then go back to supporting Man Utd or Liverpool tomorrow morning?

Club rugby has been dead since the introduction of the regions I agree with you. How many patriotic Welsh Cardiff fans who say they hate the English then sing Whittinghams name at games? It's pathetic some of the anti English resentment around here sometimes.

Fact is the people of Cardiff come out in droves to support the Welsh national rugby team, and by the looks of todays attendances so do a lot of Cardiff fans.

Saw the usual while waiting to catch the bus to the ground with my grandson, loads of fat tarts in egg shirts with the slap thick on their chubby faces. Can't think of anything worse, REPULSIVE!

Driving back from the game towards J26 on the M4 the motorway was empty, couldn't believe it, may the National Egg team play away every week :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I don't hear many Cardiff accents on international days to be honest. What the f**k do Cardiff people do? Where the f**k do they go? I think the Club needs to work exceptionally hard with Cardiff schools at all ages....there's enough of them! They need to be giving away shirts, scarves and tickets as well as thinking of plenty of other initiatives in order to get the kids (and their mams and dads) on board. It will be costly in the short term but will pay dividends in the future. Our hard core support is small. I bet most of our hard core started supporting Cardiff when in junior school. It stays with you for ever. This is what we need to tap in to. :bluescarf:

It depends alot on the parents also. My Dad was never into football he used to go watch a few local rugby games. The only time he'd watch football live was when I was playing and that wouldn't be very often. I started going to City when I was about 14 but only occasionally for good few years due to playing myself. But my son has been coming with me since he was 3 and he's nearly 15 now and loves it. Both been ST for few years now :ayatollah:

I agree with you but they turn out in big numbers every year, every game irrespective of how many games are played.

There no way the valleys are less 'rugby' than Cardiff.

Going to be really difficult to convert the egg fans to football.

For decades now the culture of rugby has been instilled in generation after generation.

Schools promote rugby to the detriment of football, the media is heavily biased in this country in favour of rugby and even the relative success of our friends form the west in staying in the Premier League and winning a major trophy has not been enough to make a dent in the dominance of rugby in Wales.

It is unlikely that any great conversion of rugby fans to supporting Cardiff will happen anytime soon I'm afraid.

I like a few of us on here don't mind the rugby, also if wales are playing any sport I'd rather us win obviously with me being a proud Welshman.Being honest though if the rugby lose it bothers me for a few minutes,if the city lose it pisses me off for a few days .The rugby only play a few times a few a year so I class it as an excuse for a day on the piss personally(as I'm sure do many)!!if we keep winning & keep in with a shout of the play offs the crowds will come back :bluebird: :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

What hurts is, we have been top 8 for most of the season, yet our average home support in the Championship this season makes 18th, shocking.
Average 14,471 still in 18th position below Bolton :o

We are taking 9,000 away tomorrow

All jokes aside though albeit the above is actually a fact, The real Cardiff City football club has never been a big club, it just attracted thousands of glory hunters starting when Hamman turned up and then Premiership football. The failing was by the amateur staff employed around that time who failed drastically to retain the fresh blood " customers " - the club whilst at dizzy heights and still to of late has been operated like a village pub team whilst thinking they are Premiership quality !

I think the OP is correct. Look at cities like Newcastle which live for their football club. If you look around Cardiff, most kids don't wear the kit of their local city.

With a population of 300,000(ish) we should be able to fill our stadium no matter what league we are in.

Wales is still a rugby nation, nothing galvanises the nation like the egg- hopefully the Euro's can change this (and this is from someone who likes both sports, shock horror)

Cardiff City Football Club has never been just about the city of Cardiff. The fan base has always been wider than that, especially the valleys. Having said that, the fan base is not as big as many people seem to think. The egg is a red herring. The Wales international egg team only pay a handful of times a year, not every week.

I lived in Cardiff from 1976 to 2010, and was used to lots of snide remarks about CCFC. That's just how it is. We were always outsiders, in the city, and in Wales as a whole. In many ways, supporting Cardiff City is a sort of cult thing. The only exception to that, in my lifetime, was during the period from 2008 to 2014. No need to explain why! Now, we're back to normal.

The clubs that we are most like are Millwall, Bristol Rovers, perhaps Birmingham City. We've got a small, hard core, fan base. True, success will bring others out if the woodwork, but they won't stick around.

Perhaps we should stop worrying about the rest of the world, and just get back to supporting CCFC. I enjoyed today, and the Leeds game. :bluescarf: :ayatollah: :bluebird:
