Sadly its a sign of the times, with less people spending money in pubs and the living wage/pension schemes coming in you will see more businesses closing down.

That sucks. I used to drink in their loads on football days.

Like it there for pre -match beer.

Enjoyed going there before games if I was down early. And food was good

I don't know if its been mentioned on here but one of my faveourite watering holes is to be demolished soon. The Gower in Roath, closed not long ago but its sad to see it being taken down.
I am shocked that the Corp is closing, surely there's enough locals round there to keep it open? There will be no pubs left in Canton at this rate. I can see why all the Grange and Splott pubs closed due to the high levels of muslims in the area but Canton still has a strong community of people who drink.

Plenty of pubs in canton fella that's the problem, all trying to outdo each other,so many offers on in the weatherspoon's & the kings, the vic etc charging £2 a pint in the week cutting each other's throats

That is a surprise to me, I travel all over South Wales with work, and see pubs closing down regularly, but I wouldn't have seen that one coming. Times have changed, and youngsters don't go out like younger people used to up until the 2000's. There were 8 in my local after work this afternoon, the youngest one was 51, times have changed, not for the better imo.

Used to be a hell of lot more, could count double figures the amount of Canton pubs that are no longer with us I imagine.

You Probably could, the corporation is a big old building to run if your not getting the punters in I suppose.the canton libs club across the road takes a lot of the custom off the corp aswell as it's cheap as chips in there & a good pint.only 7 boozers left in grange now

Canton and Riverside has lost loads of pubs over the years. The Ty Pwll Coch, the Lamb & Flag, the Red Cow, the Royal Exchange, the Maltings, the Mitre, the Wells, the Craddock, the Royal Tudor and the Wyndham to name a few.

Yes Grangetown is going the same way as Splott, zero pubs. Hope The Cornwall can survive.

Roath still has many pubs - Claude, Albany, Crofts, Poets Corner, Buchan, George, Crwys, Ernest Willows, Elms, dare I say Varsity, I had a pint in the Roath Park not long ago, thought it had closed down but I can't see how that's going to stay open for much longer. All is not lost, best thing people can do is use their local.
I personally think the rate of pubs closing down will ease soon, There are way too many pubs at the moment and once it gets down to the right closures will steadily stop. Too many pubs competing for too few people, times have changed but the pub will always be about whatever happens.

The Poets is closed now I think, The Roath Park used to be a good pub and the New Park Libs opposite was ok too.
Thu Mar 10, 2016 7:35 pm
Pubs have had it I got out of it after 15 years last year ,people's habits have change ,the pint in the week and after work crowd have gone only food type pubs will survive in the future ,energy costs have gone through the roof and profit margins each year get tighter

Iv'e just just seen that now, scheduled to be demolished
That was one of the busier ones too, I walk back from town through City Road sometimes. I'd walk past there at 1am sometimes and it'd be packed, i'd sometimes pop in for a quick beer. Corp and Poets Corner are both Greene King pubs too. Looking to make a quick buck from developers probably, scum.

Why is the Corp closing, because Cardiff City Council have increased the rent. I spoke to somebody at the pub and they are gutted. This effin council are idiots! All the staff are in the dark. I think the rent increase from this b*stard council is a joke, some idiot thinks they can justify that at the council?? We were there on the weekend and it was great, music, karaoke, snooker, footie on the box, lovely atmosphere. I effin hate our council.

Pretty sure the old bill had a big say in shutting most of the pubs in splott, not surprising either as they seemed to be well rough and attracted loons. Don't think there are many Muslims in splott either?? It's not like riverside or grange that's for sure. Pub culture is changing. Look st pubs like the 3 arches in Heath, used to be dead, give it a re fit, new menu and now it's packed out all the time.

The biggest crime was the demise of the Vulcan...cultural vandalism.Once that shut I knew we as a people have little to do with any decision that is made pertaining to what locals want, and I live in Port Talbot. I worked near there and frequented it, but just like our club money, money , money....depressing really !!!

Good to see the Pandy Inn is still doing well. Ystrad has had it for drinkers, and the Rugby Club are moving to The Galed, I want more choice where to drink, not less. I go to Scoobies/Con these days, it's ok but not like the old Galed sadly!!!
