Old Stadiums Had Something Which New Ones Never Will

The blurry footage of George McCluskey scoring in Cardiff in 1984 can be packed away forever.

That is one record dealt with at last.

But when you sit in a vast, pristine, half-empty ground like the Cardiff City Stadium as I did last night, there’s something sad about the demise of venues as rough as Ninian Park (now a quiet housing estate over the road).

Yes, it was horrible.

Yes, on our last visit there in 2007 the visiting media corp were in permanent fear of a kicking, sat in the middle of a hostile home end.
But it had soul and it put teams on edge.
In time grounds like that will disappear completely.
And we do miss them when they’ve gone.

Will always pine for ninian park the smell of fags piss and pie soaked through with all my mates stood singing with all the banter often playing shot football but everybody loved it .

The new stadium is like chalk and chease good old ninian always be missed

I still prefer watching football in older traditional grounds. West Ham and QPR will miss theirs when they've gone for sure.

The demographics of supporters attending has also changed, together with all seater stadiums.

Ninian Park will always be missed but it was the right time to move.

CCS has been quite dead this season but the atmosphere last night was quality for a half empty stadium.

It was time to leave ninian park for sure, some amazing memories none more so than beating Leeds in 2001. Life was different going to football even then, it's changed forever now just like most of our fan base. I feel blessed to have witnessed the madness that was being a cardiff fan in the 80's and 90's.

Bristol City have been able to build a new stadium on Ashton Gate and to be fair it looks good,plus theres only one main road out,so the same could of been built on Ninian Parks,interesting.

Yeah, lets bring back steam trains and children up the chimneys. Perhaps India would like to become part of the Empire again.

I just Can't believe it was the right decision to leave NP. A little bit of revamp would of been fine. You're not allowed to knock down listed buildings, but it's fine to knock traditional stadiums

land one side was rail property on 2 other sides was housing, so unless buy out about 40 houses or more couldnt expand there! as for main rd ninian was on main rd bristols a bit further back annis near if not impossible to make ninian bigger

Annis it would of been possible to rebuild Ninian park over 2/3 years,but there would of been problems with the Canton and Grange ends. Mainly houses being so close to the ground. Could you imagine how big a new Bob bank would of been though?

I work with a Bristol city fan,he is a proper die hard and he hates their new ground. He thinks its become too corporate and he really is not interested in going next year. He loved Away games at Ninian park,He made me laugh today by saying "as soon as you got off the bus you were met with a wall of hate".

Whilst I agree, it's a bit of a pointless discussion as Ninian Park is now gone forever and things have moved on...

Will never forget the old lady but anybody who thinks we should have stayed really does need to let go, it had to happen. Miss her everytime we play but good things never last forever.

I've never heard anyone who was there ever refer to Ninian Park as the "Old Lady" either. Seems like a recent thing and is on the Ninan Park Wiki page as "Old Lady" and "The Bear Pit".

Many happy memories of bus from Cwmbran with rest of Cwmbran boys to Newport and then train to central station and the buzzing walk down to Ninian, gone but never forgotten
