It breeds resentment among three of the nations of the U.K., it breeds resentment among the working class of the U.K. And whether England does or doesn't have an anthem , it is used as the English anthem in all sports. Therefore it's got a bit of an image problem ...
My grandparents too fought in the war, but I suspect that most people didn't fight particularly for the royal family or a flag that doesn't particularly represent their community , they fought to prevent Germany invading the country and to protect their families and communities.

Most of my mates in England are republicans. They hate the monarchies anthem as much as I do. In the 21st century I find it amazing that people are so subservient to an unelected head of state, who represents everything that's wrong with Britain....being born into wealth and privilege.
