Alan Shearer's warning to Manchester United FC sensation Marcus Rashford: 'Don't turn out like Cardiff City striker Federico Macheda'
3 MAR 2016
The rise of the 18-year-old is all eerily reminiscent of that of Macheda at United before he failed to fulfil his promise
Premier League legend Alan Shearer has warned new Manchester United sensation Marcus Rashford not to follow in the footsteps of Cardiff City striker Federico Macheda.
Rashford has hit the headlines at Old Trafford for his goal-scoring exploits of late, bagging a brace on his senior debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League last week, before helping United to a 3-2 win over Arsenal in the top-flight with another double last weekend.
The rise of the 18-year-old is all eerily reminiscent of that of Macheda at United. Back in 2009, Macheda was just 17 years old, when he scored a beautiful late winner for then-boss Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, before following that up with the winner at Sunderland in his next match.
But from then on, Macheda, now 24, failed to make the grade at United, making just five league starts during his seven years at Old Trafford and being sent out on loan to the likes of QPR, Doncaster and Birmingham. He eventually signed for Cardiff on a free transfer from United in May 2014.
But his time in the Welsh capital has been marked by frustration and under-achievement too. He has managed 33 appearances for the Bluebirds and scored eight goals. This season, following surgery on a back problem, he has made just six Championship appearances under boss Russell Slade.
Now Shearer, a respected pundit on Match of the Day, has stepped in to issue Rashford a stern warning. The former Newcastle and England striker insists young players like Rashford have made the breakthrough before without ever following up their potential.
And Shearer has used Macheda as the prime example of a youngster who has seen what looked like a highly-promising career go off the rails.
Macheda can't get into the Cardiff first team
“We’ve seen it many times before both at Manchester United and elsewhere with kids coming through early in their careers. Macheda is a prime example of that,” said Shearer.
“He was meant to be the next big thing after he scored at a young age for the first team. Five or six clubs later, at the age of 24, he is now at Cardiff.
“Rashford should not go chasing the rewards. He should get his head down, work hard and the rewards will follow

Like him or loathe him, the guy is a legend and one of the best strikers in Premiership history.
I personally like the guy, I like his attitude and desire to want players to give 110%, he's knowledgeable and at times hilarious on MOTD.

That's a bit harsh on Macheda from Shearer tbh, hardly the boys fault UTD loaned him out plus he was a 17 year old Italian lad completely out of his comfort zone not to mention UTD had Berbatov, Rooney, Saha, Ronaldo and Tevez at the time.
No need for Shearer to bring Macheda into it, bit sly IMO, unfortunately for the lad he has suffered with a lot of injury's but before signing for us had a good six months with Birmingham.

Implying its not Macheda's fault UTD loaned him out, also implies Its Man UTD that somehow mishandled a world class player in the making.
Quite simply, he either didn't put the effort in or was never quite good enough.

Never quite good enough for that level I wouldnt duspute that but I feel Shearers 'dont end up like Macheda' comment is a bit low and uncalled for.

Correct. There was no need to bring names into it.
Great footballer Shearer but I find his punditry arrogant as f**k.

shearer is a tw*t who got away with kicking someone on the head because he was england captain

One of the best British strikers to have ever lived but a distinctly average pundit at best. I can see what he was trying to say but Rashford hasn't scored one goal with one kick. He's scored 4 goals in 2 games. Telling him to follow the examples of those that succeeded would be better.

Another expert pundit who could not handle the real deal of being a football manager.

Certainly 'bottled' the opportunity to manage Cardiff just before 'first choice' (

) Malky was eventually employed and therefore has little or no credibility commenting on our club or its players!
Come to think of it, wasn't he part of the big BBC MotD Malky 'love-in' after he left us?
On every TV programme for weeks, as every pundit and his dog had a 'pop' at Tan. And then the truth came out and, oops, suddenly no more TV appearances on the 'luvvies' channel!
Just saying, like!

Mason, that makes me remember the Ian Rush 'milk' advert of years ago where the little boy says to his mate:
"If you don't drink your milk like Ian Rush, you'll only be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley!" The other boy replies:
"Accrington Stanley? Who are they?""Exactly!" says the first boy!

Shearer was a fantastic player but boy do I find him boring as a pundit. He'll eventually be banished to the 4AM slot on Radio Quiet to talk about the excitment of arable farming.

Rashford has made more runs & worked harder in his few games than Macheda has in his career.
