Manchester United FC legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: I sang in front of Cardiff City players so they would be less afraid, but they didn't think they were good enough for Premier League.

Wednesday 3rd March 2016

The Norweigan opened up on his failure to save the Bluebirds' from the Premier League drop in a candid interview with FourFourTwo magazine

Former Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted to deliberately making a fool of himself in front of his players so they would not be scared to make mistakes, but said they didn't believe they were good enough to beat the drop.

Solksjaer was answering questions from fans in the FourFourTwo magazine 'One-on-One' feature.

He said: "I sang What Does the Fox Say? in front of the players - it was Norway's anthem that year. That's strange when you're supposed to be the players' boss. But that was me making a fool of myself in front of them because I wanted them never to be afraid of making mistakes.

"They were. At times it felt like they thought they weren't good enough for the Premier League."

The Molde FK boss admitted earlier this month that he did not do a good job in the Welsh Capital, and has now put it down to an inability to get enough solidity in his team.

He said: "I was probably the wrong man at the wrong time. I've always been at Manchester United or Molde, dominating games and played entertaining, attacking football. I wasn't mean or cynical enough.

"My teams weren't solid enough back then. Now I've learned a lot. My team at Molde are a lot more solid now."

Nevertheless, the United legend has said that he never dreaded going to work at Cardiff, even though he is happier now than he was managing in the Championship.

He said: "If it comes, it comes [a Premier League job]. We [Molde] got through the Europa League: we beat Celtic twice, we won at Fernebahce, we didn't lose to Ajax. It was historic - an unbelievable achievement for this club.

"To have those matches... no disrespect but when you look at some of the Championship teams that I managed against, this is the better option."

He also admitted that the 3-0 defeat to Swansea City was a key moment in his disappointing time in charge of the Bluebirds'.

He said: "We were unlucky because Swansea changed their manager just before we played them. That turned their season, and it probably turned ours as well when we lost at their place.

"They could have waited another week or so before Garry Monk got the job..."

I actually think he'll come good and be a decent manager one day - like he admitted himself wrong guy at the wrong club at the wrong time. Unfortunately for us we were a big learning curve for him and he didn't adapt quickly enough.

I would agree with that. If he had joined us a few years ago and built up momentum (a bit like Eddie Howe at Bournemouth) then OGS brand of football could have worked. Literally when he joined us there was a RED flag flying over our club.

For several reasons it was a club in the middle of a civil war and was heading only one way and that was down. The next season we suffered a relegation hangover and that did for him.

If he is to become a top rate manager in the future then I believe his time with us will be pivotal. A bit like Robert Earnshaw when he was loaned out to Berwick Rangers to toughen him up
