Travelling fans did Cardiff City proud

Mon Feb 29, 2016 11:07 pm

This letter appeared in tonight's echo. It's truly something to be very proud of, to every travelling fan who made that long journey we applaud each and every one of you.

Travelling fans did Cardiff City proud

I am writing as a fan of Middlesbrough FC to say a heartfelt thanks to the fans of Cardiff City who were at the game here in Teesside.

I am referring to the way the few hundred loyal Bluebirds fans who made the long journey from South Wales to the Riverside Stadium joined in with and showed the utmost respect to tributes being paid to local BBC football commentator Ali Brownlee who died recently.

Ali was a much-loved figure in Teesside who was passionate about Middlesbrough FC and it was nice to see the lads and lasses from Wales joining in the minute’s applause and showing total respect.

I know the fans who had made the trek here on a cold February Tuesday were probably Cardiff’s most committed fans but I can assure you their attitude did Cardiff City FC proud.

I for one hope to see the Bluebirds promoted this season – in second place just behind Middlesbrough of course!

Personally, as one of those fans who were there, I don't think we deserve to be praised. What we did was common decency.

We joined in with the applause, a few of our fans turned their lights on their phones when the Boro fans did and we showed respect - the way it should be.

Think it's a sad world when fans are supposed to be proud of paying respect to someone who has died.

Just my opinion though and, of course, RIP Ali Brownlee :thumbright:

I was there, too, and I know what you mean. To be honest, most football fans would do what we did. Fans who come to us respect our tributes, too. Still, it's a nice letter, the Boro fans did seem impressed on the night. The letter was in the Western Mail, too. It's nice to be praised sometimes!
