Cardiff City moved ever closer to the play-offs to leave Russell Slade adamant his team can defy doubters and seal a top-six finish, saying: “I believe”.
A penalty double from Anthony Pilkington made it back-to-back home wins and moved the Bluebirds to three points of Sheffield Wednesday in the last play-off spot going into next week's derby clash with Bristol City.
And Slade says he and his team have the confidence others may lack in their promotion ambitions having enjoyed a run of form that has seen them pick up 15 points from the last eight games.
Asked if he felt others believed his team are capable of maintaining their run over the final 12 games, Slade said: “I believe and that's the most important thing. Hopefully that gets through to the players. Certainly at home I feel the belief we can win games and we have got good momentum with us, a togetherness and a strong attitude. You hope others will see it and fans will return to the stadium.”
Pilkington grabbed a first-half penalty and followed it up with a second ten minutes from time before Callum Robinson's consolation, and Slade said: “We've won by a couple of penalties but we were the only team to really try and create opportunities and could have benefited more from those we've got.
“But we got the win and with 12 games to go it's the business end of the season and we're at a stage where the result becomes more important than the performance. We have to find a way to win and we've done that against a side on a run. We're in the form we want to be going into the final third of the season.”
Beaten Preston boss Simon Grayson admitted he didn't have any issue with the decisive second spot kick, saying: “I've looked at it and there's a tug, if it was the other way around we'd have wanted it
“The first-half was a non event, didn't play with energy shown in a lot of games and there wasn't much in it but the penalty changes things.
“We changed the system to try and get some more urgency and we looked like a different team. We responded well and looked like we could have got something out of it at the end.
“They were hanging on at the end and we're disappointed but we can't be too down because of the run we've been on.
“Cardiff didn't have too many clear cut chances, it was a bit dour to be fair, but they got the breaks.”

About 10 years ago we needed a result at Sheffield Wednesday to clinch a play-off spot. It was the last game of the season and they were mid-table with nothing to play for. Admittedly we were doing a usual Dave Jones end of season crash, but still Wednesday went for it and beat us 1-0 and we finished outside the play-offs.
Their fans naturally took the piss and it was hard to take. In the words of Kevin Keegan "I would love it" if we beat them to the last spot.
Boy I can hold a grudge

Not sure how Grayson can say we didn't have clear cut chances - I counted at least four, not including the two penalties. More than his team offered, at least. Fair play to him for his comments about the second penalty though, and God bless the linesman (made up for being useless the rest of the game!).
