Report: Everton chasing £10 million-rated Championship goalkeeper

By Tom Nightingale

Friday 26th Feb 2016

The Toffees are reportedly keen on bringing Cardiff City stopper David Marshall to Goodison Park to replace Tim Howard.

Everton will look to sign Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall in the summer as a replacement for Tim Howard, but may be scared off by the Bluebirds' £10 million valuation, according to a report in the Mirror.

Howard is widely expected to leave Goodison Park at the end of the season when his is contract due to expire, with the American thought to be keen on a move to an MLS franchise.

Roberto Martinez currently has his former Wigan stopper Joel Robles as first-choice goalkeeper, but with the Spaniard having made just 19 Premier League starts in his time in England, the Toffees boss is reported to be looking for reinforcements between the posts.

The Mirror claims that the Merseyside club have been long-time admirers of Cardiff 'keeper Marshall, and that they see now as the prime time to prise him away from the Welsh capital.

However, the 30-year-old, who cost the Championship club just £500,000 when he signed from Norwich City seven years ago, has two years left on his contract.

Its a strange one for me. Its probably the first time I've ever thought that such a pivotal player for Cardiff City has paid his due and deserves a move on, I've never thought any player should move on, we've always been a club 'going places' until recently and those top players should've stick with us. We've held on to him for longer than we deserve, lets cash in on what we can and let the man shine on the top flight for the last few years of his career.

I'm quite happy to part with him, as he's done his time and deserves a big transfer before his career is over. But if we let him go, I worry that it will lead to some other big names leaving us.

I can't see us getting £10m now though, too much time has passed since he put in those stellar BPL performances. £5.5-£6m should be the aim now, which would still give us decent money to play with. Could be that we can drive the asking price up given the money we all know the BPL clubs will have next year though.

Why on earth would a Cardiff City supporter advocate for selling their prize asset?

I don't understand the mindset, surely we want to keep players performing at their peak? If he was second choice, on the way down what ever but for supporters to advocate for this baffling.

It seems people print £10 million and all of a sudden it's the deal of century.

Keepers like Marshall are worth 12 point plus a season, sure Simon Moore will do the basics well but it's that little of star dust that Marshall and Whitts have that you don't notice till their gone.

Ffs we should be hanging on to him like he's the crown jewels. He's a quality athlete in a team of slightly above average also rans.

My personal opinion is that City would only get about £5mill offered and I hope they turn it down :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Good question and some of the replies have already explained some reasons. One Marshall has been a loyal employee and has paid back his transfer fee a million times over. It would be crass to stop his ambition of playing for Everton if the player wanted to pursue that avenue.

Secondly he is 30 years of age and in football that is a pivotal moment in any career where diminishing returns become a factor. Any bid above £5m would be brilliant business for everyone concerned.

The fact is we are a selling club and should do more to develop our own talent or find and mould talent from the lower divisions or bargains to be had from Championship/Premiership clubs. If Marshall goes then we find a replacement. We did that when DM was signed in 2009 and frankly we have to become streetwise in the transfer market as we once were.

I don't see anyone paying 10m.

More likely 4 or 5m but still a good fee if reinvested in the team well.
I'd sell if I thought we had a manager who would use it well but we don't.

Also think Marshall deserves the move.
