A man who attacked Colchester United fans at Southend United's 3-0 victory in the Essex derby at Roots Hall on Saturday, February 6, has been banned from attending any football matches in the country for five years.

Mark Coshever, 39, of Eaton Place, Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, appeared at Southend Magistrates Court today (Wednesday, February 24) charged with affray and pitch invasion.

He pleaded guilty and was given a five year banning order from attending any football match in the country. He was also given an eight-week suspended sentence and ordered to pay £265 in fines.

The game had been an ill tempered affair, and video footage surfaced after the final whistle showing fans invading the pitch and one spectator jogging across a corner of the pitch from the Southend United fans' section to the Colchester fans before throwing punches at those in the North Stand.


A number of other fans are then seen joining those on the pitch before they are quickly all removed by stewards and a few Southend players.

THE thug who attacked Colchester United fans during the Essex derby at Roots Hall earlier this month has been banned from UK football matches for five years.

Mark Coshever, 39, of Eaton Place, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, pleaded guilty to affray and entering the pitch during the game between Southend United and Colchester United, on February 6.


He was sentenced to the banning order, given an eight-week suspended sentence and ordered to pay £265 in fines when appearing at Southend Magistrates Court this morning.

Coshever admitted leaving the stand and entering the playing area during the match.

He proceeded to walk across the pitch and aim a short burst of punches at the Colchester United fans before he was restrained by stewards.

He walked back to the Southend United fans but was not arrested.

A few days later, on February 9, he haanded himself in at Rayleigh police station and gave a statement to police, who subsequently arrested him.

He was also banned from visiting any city in which Southend United are playing a game and from Southend town centre four hours before and after kick-off of any home fixture.

Common sense sentencing I feel. I really don't think prison sentences should be handed for offences like this and if that means a hefty ban from football then so be it, i'd have probably given the man even longer of a ban after what I saw in that video
