" WHY RUSSELL SLADE HAS WON ME OVER AND MY QUESTION IS HAS HE WON YOU OVER? "

Thursday 25th Feb 2016

Over the last few months, I have warmed to Russell Slade being our manager more and more. He has always conducted himself well as well as taken the team to a decent league position. Very few of us would have expected us to be five points off the play-offs and in 8th place heading towards March.

Let's remember when he arrived we had just spent a lot of money. The previous manager had brought in the likes of Adam Le Fondre, Sean Morrison and Anthony Pilkington amongst others. A lot of these players then seemed to lose interest when OGS lost his job. Almost as if they only joined because of the manager. It was then Slade's job to try and get these players to play for him - a manager who had come from a team towards the bottom of League One.

Some of those players have stuck with us and are now playing for Slade such as Morrison, Pilkington and Bruno Manga. But last season would have been a struggle for any manager, because we didn't feel like a proper team. Le Fondre never really got going and he was supposed to be one of the key players for us. You could say the same about others - Tom Adeyemi is especially one that springs to mind. Many thought we would struggle to stay up with Slade in charge, myself included, but in the end he comfortably took us to finish in mid-table.

He has never had a lot of funds to work with. Obviously this last transfer window was very good for him, considering the transfer embargo. To play the system and bring in the likes of Lex Immers, Tom Lawrence and Kenneth Zohore was very impressive. During his time at the club he's brought in plenty of first team players now such as Scott Malone, Sammy Ameobi, Stuart O'Keefe and Lee Peltier. He's also had a cope with the club insisting on selling important players - Kenwyne Jones is a good example of that. And let's not forget the Tony Watt saga.

Now, I'll be honest, at the start of this season I could not see us being above 14th/15th for much of the season. I was totally against Russell Slade as our manager. As recently as last month I was still criticising him at times. But time can sometimes help you read things differently.

As i said at the start, we are five points off the play-offs. Did anyone really expect us to be in this position at the start of the season? I didn't. Slade deserves so much credit for that.

That is why Russell Slade has won me over. If I'm being totally honest, I never expected myself to say that. But the work he has done with us has been above most of our expectations. Whether we make the play-offs or not, whether he stays or moves on. I honestly believe he can be proud of his 18 months or so with us :ayatollah:

Ned, now the truth is out about the amount of pressure he has been under during the financial re-structring (polite term) I am beginning to lean towards the guy!

He has, in fairness, remained a gentleman throughout his time here and now appears to be let off the leash a little; hence the improved form/style of play of late!

Jury still out, but a positive verdict expected to follow soon! :ayatollah:
This is OUR club, not Vincent Tan’s! He is a temporary custodian and will be judged on the state he leaves us in when he leaves!

For me its not a question of whether Russel Slade is a nice man or can manage the finances.

Its does he have the ability to get us to the Premier League ?

Apart from last Saturday I have seen little evidence of that.

With all due respect it's Tan holding us back, not the manager. I feel for Russ in that respect, his hands are tied and his mouth gagged by Vinny T.

Can't agree with that.

It wasn't Tan who displayed tactical ineptitude with an inability to see out three games with a 2-0 lead.

It isn't Tan who insisted for virtually the whole season far in playing 4-4-2 whatever the players he had available, whatever the opposition or whatever the game situation!!

Slade has done well in stabilising the club but his unwillingness to adapt or be flexible will not bring the best out of this squad, in the Championship and certainly not in the Premier.

Nice to see you support no one involved at club or even the club itself for that matter as obviously by own admission their all yes men because tan employs everyone at club? :laughing6:

That's old news now and the world (bar a few) has moved on! ;)

We don't have (or need) to forget but we DO need to move on, as we cannot change the past

Things appear to be heading in the right direction and who would have said that a season or so ago??

Bitterness doesn't usually allow room for progression, so try to be positive for the sake of the club! :ayatollah:

Got to agree with you Sven, Mr Tan has hurt me deeply and it will take a long time for very deep wounds to heal, we are however all different as people some look back and hold grudges, some let the past go and look to the future.

Tan is putting a lot of things right, his biggest statement wasn't the money but his admission of his mistakes. I always like to look forward not back or you will always get dragged down.

As for Slade, while he is a yes man he's done a decent job although I am sometimes undecided if a different manager with the same players would have done better, I guess it depends wgo that manager is.

Habe seen a lot of positives of late both on and off the pitch, last week was the best I seen city in years.

Who else, who would take the same money as Slade, would do a better job?

My feeling is that he is the best man for the job as he has an excellent relationship with Tan. I've been watching a lot of Brian Clough stuff recently and his disdain for Chairman and interferers. I think the club needs a soft manager like Slade as it's what Tan demands of his manager.

Tan owns the club, hence, that's why Slade is the right fit for the club. More so, to give Tan credit I would say to run the club as a business it's easier to employ Slade than a modern-day Brian Clough, i'm sure Clough wouls have walked quicker than his Leeds Utd job lasted.

correction: I did Clough a disservice there. He was able to get players on the cheap and turn them into title winners! Just wouldn't take any interference, would love to of heard his retort to his owner telling the players to shoot more :laughing6:

When you consider the whole picture, then its hard not to say he hasn't done a bad job. Yes there's better out there. But I'm sure we could of had worse. And as majority of supporters stated at start of season. Anywhere above 10th would be a decent season

As stated above RS is excellent value for money. Read the thread about OGS where he and his backroom staff cost £3.2m to get rid of and what did they deliver? Relegation and 17th place in the Championship.

For small % of that RS has sorted the mess left by OGS out and made us competitive in this league. Slowly but surely there is an improvement and I'm willing to give the fella more time on that basis.

However, I would expect to see an improvement in certain areas which have been pointed out by other posters in this thread.
