Gutted to hear this, I knew Veggie (Stephen Venables) well back in the seventies, he was a good mate, a great laugh and always good company. Away trips on his bus back then were the best ever, RIP Veggie.

veggie part of the barry boys rhoose airport coach along with dessy & Donald(rip) who used to travel everywhere in the seventies. That bus never took a backward step from anyone.
always remember veggie used to go around the bluebirds club at home games asking everyone to lend him ten pence
those were the proper lads days in fairness and although there were no cameras or pepper sprays to deal with and the old bill only had truncheons they thought nothing about setting the Alsatians on you and many a lad had a chunk out of his arse trying to get away from them.

If you have read the book under the grange end star, there's a whole chapter about the authors day out with the barry lads at wembley in 1977 where he meets the wild man of barry, that was veggie, a complete nutter.

I was a 14 year old on one of those bus's that day and have seen practically every tear up involving the city since, but you could write a book about that day out.

I remember going back to the diy shop where we got dropped off and there were loads of road signs and cones stacked up on the other side of the road, all the youngsters decided to block the road the road off and divert all the traffic coming out from wembley up a side street, there was absolute chaos it took the police ages to sort it out.

stilll laugh about it now.

the good thing about the barry lads in those days was despite having some real hard bastards they used to like a youth policy and looked out for you while you were learning your trade.

I feel sorry for the youngsters these days theres no buzz any more. and there music is absolute shit .

I registered to post my condolences to Vegy, I met him in the Basset Arms in Barry and started going on the Barry Bus to City games, it was always eventful :) I saw him a few weeks ago and he was in a bad way and I realised it was only a matter of time till I heard he had died. Thanks for the memories Veg some great laughs.

I lived in the next street to veggie and grew up with him.
In the early seventies we followed the City everywhere and went home and away with the BBB until I was exiled to the other side of the bridge in 77. I was with him at Wembley the notorious night the coaches left us, lol, the day Man U came to town and we pelted them with black nuggets from a coal wagon and the day Tottenham ran most of us except the great man on Ninian Park Road. Many times I sat in the back of the transit alongside Veggie with Des and Don up front clocking up the miles supporting the mighty Bluebirds. Truly great times and fantastic memories.
I haven't seen or talked to the man for a long time but forever I will remember that when he took his false teeth out something was about to happen.
God bless pal it was a true honour to have known you.

Vegy didn't only take his teeth out, he was a terrible man for taking his cock out as well :o remember a barmaid smacking it with a pint glass when he put it on the bar of the Vic in Barry
