If there has been one criticism of Russell Slade it is that he lacks the ability to switch formations around to suit the players he has. The Cardiff manager’s hand might have been forced here with Craig Noone out and Sammy Ameobi too, but the alterations he made finally worked out. This was effectively a 4-2-3-1, with Joe Ralls and Stuart O’Keefe providing the platform and Lex Immers, Tom Lawrence and Peter Whittingham pushing on to support Anthony Pilkington up-top. It switched around and was adaptable, but, particularly in that first-half Brighton were left shell-shocked by a Bluebirds side which was resolute at the back and, finally, fleet of foot and bright moving forward.

Well done Slade for giving the 442 the finger for once.
