John joins the League One side as they fight to avoid the drop
John was a PL regular but has struggled under Slade
Cardiff City manager, Russell Slade has insisted young defender Declan John has ‘lost his way’ with the Bluebirds.
The 20-year-old left-back was sent out on loan this week to League One Chesterfield having barely featured at all at Cardiff under Slade.
Many thought the attack-minded left back had made the break-through in the Welsh capital when he featured regularly for the Bluebirds in the Premier League, starting 16 games in the club’s top-flight season, under then-boss Malky Mackay. It was a time too which saw him earn two senior caps for Wales too.
John has fallen out of favour this season
But Merthyr-born John has been a frustrated figure more recently at Cardiff and Slade said the move to Chesterfield would do the youngster good.
“Sometimes young players can lose their way,” said Slade.
“We are trying to get Dec back on track, we are trying to do that and if that means dropping down a level, then that’s the only way. We are looking for a reaction from him, to move him forward.
“It happens to young players, they can make progress and they can stagnate. If they are not playing, they are not moving forward.
But Slade insisted John still has a future with the Bluebirds when he returned from what is initially a month’s loan with the Spireites.
And he said there were other young players in his squad too, the likes of Tommy O’Sullivan and Jazzi Barnum-Bobb who were are Newport on loan earlier this season, who he wanted to send out to pick up pitch time.
“Declan can come back of course,” added Slade.
“He is a good athlete and has good attributes. When he is really at it, mentally, there is a player there. I want to get others out on loan. There’s a chance to build up their CV and there is experienced to be gained.”
DECLAN SETS HIS SIGHTS ON EUROS
Friday 19th Feb 2016
Declan John hopes his Chesterfield loan move can help him add to his two Wales caps at the Euros this summer.
The main thing is for me to come and get game time so I can perhaps get a call-up for the Euros. I’m really looking forward to it and showing everyone how good a player I am.
I can’t remember how many years it’s been since we last qualified, so if I could get on the bus and go with the boys that would be superb.
