CHRIS HUGHTON SINCE BEING BRIGHTON MANAGER
19th Feb 2016
In December 2014, The Seagulls were in disarray. Former Liverpool favourite Sami Hyypia had departed after one win in 14 Championship games. In came Rhondda-born, former Merthyr Tydfil player, Nathan Jones, as caretaker boss, it was only two games he was in charge, but it proved a turning point. Under Jones, Brighton fought back from 2-0 down to draw at home to Reading then won 2-0 at Fulham. Then Hughton was brought in.
Brian Owen: “Chris Hughton has said many times, after those results under Jones, he never felt he was taking over an ailing side, but one on a high.”
EXPERIENCE SURELY HELPS
Newcastle were 11th in the Premier League when Hughton was sacked as boss in December 2010. The Magpies can currently only dream of that now. Hughton went on to keep Norwich up, guiding the Canaries to an 11th-place finish, and could have done it again had he not departed once more. In the Championship, he got Birmingham to the play-offs. Now he seems to be weaving some magic at Brighton. The 57-year-old is well-experienced at Premier League and higher end of the Championship level. That lack of top-level experience is a stick often used to beat Slade at Cardiff.
EXPECTATIONS ARE FINE, BUT DON’T GO OVER THE TOP
After that 20th-placed finish after half a season under Hughton, Brighton fans were hardly excited ahead of the new campaign. The Seagulls had not won in their last seven matches of the previous season, losing five under Hughton. Expectations were low for this season to be fair. Perhaps Cardiff supporters do tend to get too many high expectations about their own teams chances.
Brian Owen: “There were still plenty of people waiting to be won over by Hughton when this season started. There were not calls to get rid of him, of course, but many felt he was not right for the job. The season before many found his football boring and results were still not great.”
GOOD RECRUITMENT IS KEY
After Hyypia’s departure, another key change at Brighton came when they changed their Head of Recruitment too. After what had proved disappointing forays into the transfer market in previous seasons, suddenly under Hughton, some key deals were done, particularly last summer. Israeli striker Tomer Hemed has found the net regularly since arriving and the return of club legend Bobby Zamora provided a lift.
