Just read one of the most stupid comments on your board about Swans reaching the top using Liverpool players.
This was the reason they got into financial problems. The board at the time should have been saying no to these transfers and building that stand instead of signing players past their sell by date with no possibility of recovering their money.
It is all very well singing the likes of Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan Colin Irwin and Ray Kennedy but in hindsight whilst it was great whilst it lasted it proved to be a poor decision. This also applies to the likes of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank with you.
Good practice is to buy younger players and sell them on for profit. It is noticeable clubs like Liverpool are following that policy now.
Huw Jenkins and co have got that right unlike their predecessors. Profits on players like Bony Shelvey Davies Allan and Sinclair is the correct way forward and that would apply to your club as well. It is impossible to try and compete with the Man Utd of this world. They turned over in excess of 400 million and there is absolutely no way Swansea or Cardiff will ever match their global brand

Think that is in response to one of my posts. Perhaps he should read it again. I stated that Swansea got into the top flight by signing Liverpool players coming towards the end of their careers. I don't think anyone can dispute that. I never at any time said that we should do the same thing. I suggested it was an option to sign one, possibly two proven strikers who are in the later stages of their career as a cure for our goal scoring problems. The comments are under the heading Idriss Saadi, and are there for all to see. There is no mention of us signing a bucket load in the way that Swansea did, they were used purely as an example to show that players coming towards the end of their careers can still do a job. One good striker could repay his costs and plenty more if his goals make the difference between just missing out on promotion or actually reaching the top flight. I don't think there is any dispute that we are struggling to find a proven scorer at the minute, but despite this, are still in the play off hunt.

I have found the post that Roathie finds to be one of the most stupid, and this is it:
"I agree with you that there is nobody in our squad who can fire us into the play offs. I accepted a long time back that we would be playing Championship football next season. We all know that there is not going to be much cash being splashed out on new players for the next five years, and so the club will have to sniff around for some bargains. I don't see any of our current squad setting the league alight on the goal scoring front, but hopefully we may be able to sign a proven scorer who is coming towards the end of a successful career, or unearth someone like Ernie. Swansea once reached the top division on the back of ex Liverpool players in the later stages of their careers, so we may be able to pick up a couple of older strikers who can still do a job for a year or two".
As can be seen, there is no suggestion that we go out and buy a whole lot of ex Liverpool players in the way that Swansea once did. One or two proven strikers no longer able to make it at Premier League level on short term contracts are not likely to bankrupt the club. In addition, if they were to make the difference between City being promoted or remaining in the Championship, Roathie should realise that the money now available for reaching the promised land is a world away from when Swansea got there. The reward for Premier League football would make the cost of a half decent striker look like loose change.

So now that the oddball gets deleted on here as soon as he starts his usual nonsense, he's now resorting to sending emails to the owner. I bet he's got carrier pigeons already trained for when that goes tits-up for too. They'll probably shit on his head out of instinct.

If memory serves me correctly (and I may be wrong as I don't follow Swansea that closely), Swansea shot through all the leagues from div 3 to the top flight in a very short space of time. I was under the impression that Toshack had signed a number of ex Liverpool stars who were instrumental in their meteoric rise to the top. I even have a vague recollection of Swansea being top of the league briefly during their first season in the top flight. There may not have been any Liverpool players in the match in which they achieved promotion, but plenty of them played an important part under Toshack's guidance during their climb from Div 3 to the top.

Tommy Snith and Ian Callaghan helped in in the 3rd division plus Tosh himself, then Colin Irwin and Ray Kennedy in the first division, we also had Phil Boersma lower down the league plus Alan Waddle who was once on Liverpools books, not as many as some might say.

I think Emlyn Hughes was there for a while as well. I liked watching him play when he was at Liverpool, one of those players who always gave 100%. He was ok on Question of Sport as well.
Wed Feb 17, 2016 10:11 pm
Hughes went to Swansea in 1983 as a favour to Toshack after he was sacked by Rotherham .
Another ex England captain went to Swansea for a few games a few months after Hughes left ,after leaving Cardiff following a bust up ....
