CHESTERFIELD SIGN JOHN

Cardiff's Wales international defender Declan John, 20, has joined League 1 Chesterfield on a month-long loan, until March 15 initially.

Cardiff City defender Declan John joins League One Chesterfield on loan

Tuesday 16th Feb 2016

The left-back, who can play further up-field, made his first team debut for the Bluebirds back in August 2012

Young Cardiff City defender, Declan John, has gone on loan to League One Chesterfield.
Declan John played 20 times in the Premier League for Cardiff City.

The 20-year-old Wales international will be with the Spireites for an initial month's loan as they look to avoid relegation.

Merthyr Tydfil-born John has made 36 appearances for the Bluebirds, but failed to make an impression this term under Russell Slade only coming on as a late substitute in Cardiff’s 0-0 draw at Preston back in October.

The left-back, who can play further up-field, made his first team debut for the Bluebirds back in August 2012 in a League Cup defeat against Northampton. His only other appearance that term was the FA Cup loss at Macclesfield.

But John was to play a big part in the Bluebirds’ Premier League season under then-boss Malky Mackay. Indeed his league debut for Cardiff came in August 2013 when he started the Bluebirds’ first game on their return to the top-flight, a 2-0 defeat at West Ham.

He went on to make 20 appearances in the Premier League that season. It was a run that was to earn him a call up to the senior
squad.

John made his full international debut when he started in a World Cup qualifier against Macedonia in October 2013 which the Dragons won 1-0. His only other international cap to date came in June 2014 in a friendly defeat at the hands of Holland in Amsterdam.

Last season John again found game time limited for the Bluebirds, featuring in just six Championship encounters, before manager Slade sent him out on loan to Barnsley where the youngster worked with then-Tykes’ boss Danny Wilson who is now in charge at Chesterfield.

John joins a Chesterfield side who are fighting for their League One lives right now. They are fourth off the bottom currently on goal-difference behind Fleetwood.

As I always say, when a player has to drop a league to play then they're not good enough to be playing for us. The boy has talent. Hopefully some game time there might improve him further then who knows, he might get back in the team here again.

What a load of crap.

When Kane dropped down to the championship with Leicester. Didn't do him any harm.

Jordan Ibe at Liverpool was playing for Derby last year.

Think he'll be one player hoping Slade doesn't renew his contract. :laughing6:

Another player who I can't believe doesn't get more game time.

Certainly didn't let himself down in premier league even though he was only 18...not sure why but his career gone down hill rapidly in the last 18months...i wonder why?????

Hopefully Slade will be gone at end of season and new manager will have a look at these rejected players and reinvigorate their careers with us

I think that's his point if you actually read the comment properly.

If he has to drop down to League 1 then perhaps he's not good enough now to be playing for us (just like Kane and Ibe had to drop down at the time) but by getting some game time/experience/development then he might come back and play in the first team just like Kane and Ibe did too.

Neither in my opinion. He's not good enough defensively at the moment, and we have much better options in Peltier, Malone and Fabio (who is also not good enough defensively but still considerably better than John overall).

We're just very well off in that area at the moment, but John will hopefully be one for the future if he improves positionally.

He was heralded as the next Gareth Bale on here by some posters and i'm not exaggerating.

Really don't understand why he hasn't had any opportunities with us this season.

As I recall he had a bit of pace and skill.

Anything gone on we don't know about?

Exactly, there were lots that liked to pick holes in his game. But all considered being 18 and still adjusting to a new position I thought he showed real potential. It's a shame players like Declan are being left to rot. Not even a show in the cup it's a disgrace

Totally agree

Chesterfield have signed Cardiff City defender Declan John on a one month loan deal.

John has failed to impress Bluebirds boss Russell Slade this season, making only one appearance for Cardiff in the 2015/16 season.

Due to a lack of playing time, John has been allowed to leave on loan, joining League One strugglers Chesterfield on an initial one month loan deal.

Danny Wilson’s Spireites side are currently languishing in the League One relegation zone, and boast the league’s fourth worst defensive record, having conceded 50 goals in 30 games this season.

It’s the second time Wilson has captured John on loan as a manager, having brought in the youngster on loan last season as boss of fellow League One side Barnsley.
n Cardiff’s debut Premier League season, John featured heavily, making 20 league appearances for The Bluebirds. John’s impressive Premier League performances saw him earn an international call-up from Wales in 2014.

However, John has struggled to find form since Cardiff’s relegation back to the Championship, and has fallen out of favour at the Welsh club completely this term.

Despite John being aged only 20, he already has a wealth of experience, and Spireites boss Wilson will be hoping that he can utilise John’s experience in the coming weeks as Chesterfield look to fend off relegation to League Two.

What makes it a load of crap? He's gone to chesterfield. Why hasn't he gone to someone like mk dons so he can play championship football?

If anything, your comment backed mine up. Kane and ibe weren't good enough so had to drop a league. Then they got game time, probed themselves and now they're reaping the rewards.

Should have been sent out at the start of the season, at least we would have know if he has the potential to make it at championship level then. Probably his level but who knows

They went out on loan to gain experience not because they "werent good enough". John already has experience of playing a season in the premiership and should have been given a chance.

If u go on the theory that he's good enough because he's played in the prem then you'd not be able to say revell is not good enough. He's played championship football so he must have been?
Cardiff were not good enough for the premier league full stop.

I mentioned he was a good player but there's obviously a reason he's dropped a division.

Re: UPDATED " Another Cardiff Player goes out on loan "

Comparing a 32 year old journeyman to a 20 year old is just stupid but I'll play along.

Revell isn't good enough for championship but is good enough for league 1.

John maybe not quite good enough for the Prem but given he's had a years experience in the Prem the very least he deserved was a chance to show what he can do in the championship. He hasn't been given a chance, not even in the cup games, instead we played journeymen like Revell and Tamas.

It's pathetic and if I had kids in the Cardiff academy I'd be very worried for their future development under a manager like Slade.

I agree entirely Mr Polo....Declan, Harris, Sullivan, Olishja, Barnum Bobb and Kennedy have not started a single game between them for us this season despite doing well while out on loan at other clubs...something seriously wrong somewhere...this simply wouldn't happen at any other club.

Your right, the decision to play a team with players like revel and tamas in the cup was an absolute joke
