If you are looking for a reason why Cardiff City could be set to miss out on a Championship play-off place, there is one staring you right in the face.

The Bluebirds are the draw kings of the Championship, forget that, they are one of two teams to have drawn the most games not only in the second-tier, but in the whole Football League and the Premier League too.

Right now, with 31 league games played, Russell Slade’s men have had to settle for a point on 13 occasions. It is a largely unwanted record equalled only by Leeds, whose goalless stalemate with Middlesbrough last night saw them reach 13 having played the same number of games as Cardiff.

Blackburn, also in the Championship, have drawn 13 too, but have played two games less than the Bluebirds and Leeds whilst Oldham, mired in the League One relegation zone, have also earned just a point on 13 occasions, but with only 28 games played so far.

The fact the Bluebirds have drawn so many games really sums up the inconsistency Slade’s men have displayed in matches this term, not just from game to game, but during the 90 minutes of an encounter too.

It is a big reason too why Cardiff have managed back-to-back league wins just once this season and that was back in September.

The biggest concern of course, in that epic run of parity, is the number of times the Bluebirds have thrown away two points whilst in a winning position to take all three.

Slade’s men have done that in four games this term, pure conjecture, of course, but if they had managed to hold on, they would have an extra eight points and they would now be on 54 points, firmly ensconced in the play-offs in fifth place ahead of Sheffield Wednesday and Derby and within striking distance of the automatic spots.

The wastefulness has been marked and inexplicable. At Blackburn, back in August, an 88th minutes equaliser was let in, the lead thrown away too at then-leaders Brighton in October. In November and December came the shocking capitulations that might well be reflected on at the end of the campaign as pivotal.

At home to Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday, the Bluebirds contrived to actually throw away two goal leads and had to settle for a point instead on both occasions.

In fairness though to Slade and his men have four times too, fought back from behind to earn a point, getting level against Fulham, QPR, Nottingham Forest and most recently at home to Rotherham.

But what sums up the problems Cardiff have experienced this term is that five of the 13 draws so far have been goalless. Away at Preston and Ipswich and at home to Bristol City neither side managed to find the net. Cardiff’s most recent two games have ended goalless too, at home to MK Dons and last weekend away at Charlton.

It is that statistic really that sums up most of the campaign under manger Slade, a resistance at the back, but a dreadful lack of the ability to actually put the ball in the net. Some might say, it epitomises how dull some of the football has been from the Bluebirds too often this campaign as well.

The Bluebirds face a tough match at home to Brighton on Saturday, currently five points off the play-offs, a draw against The Seagulls might not be good enough for Slade and his men. But who is going to bet against it?

But even if that is a draw, the current Bluebirds’ players have a long way to go to match the exploits of the Cardiff side back in the 1997-98 season.

Back then, in the old Third Division, the basement, the capital club drew half of the league games they played that campaign. 23 draws out of 46 matches. It is still a Football League record, shared by Cardiff with Exeter and Hartlepool who, remarkably, did it in the same division in the same season. In football history only Norwich can sort of better that, in 1978-79 in the top-flight, the Canaries fought out 23 draws too, but managed it over just 42 games.

Its not just the strikers, in five of those games we had the lead and let it slip.
