Why I'm disappointed in yesterday's ref

Sun Feb 14, 2016 8:03 pm

Not the sending off, although it was a dubious second yellow. The whistle could not have gone more than one second before Ameobi's shot hit the back of the net.

The refs body language was shocking, demonstrative, aggressive, pointing directly at Ameobi from no more than a yard or so and generally on a power trip. Ameobi gave him no cause to be so aggressive. He stands there, smiles in disbelief as he is being lambasted by the ref. Three appears to be no answering back or words.

The right decision according to the LOAF but very badly executed. I just hope the assessor had a quiet word. No wonder this guy has had more red cards than anyone else this season.

If this is correct (I wasn't at the game) then a sit down with our own former Premier League Referee, Keith Copper would do him some good ;)

Keith, one of the most respected referees out there, once said he was (perhaps) a little too 'card happy' when he initially got on to the League List and was 'guided' by senior officials before settling into a hugely respected refereeing career at the highest levels

Sadly, the 'professional' heights of refereeing in the Premier League is now unattainable for modern Welsh Referees thanks to Alun Evans and his FAW cronies, despite our best/professional clubs still being in that system

The bugger was card happy before he got on the league's list, I know that from personal experience.

Me too, Steve! I knew Keith way back in the Ponty League and he was a tyrant on the field! LOL

Did well, learned his trade and hugely respected in his profession. Is a great guy socially, too!

I think Keith was the last 'FA' referee to come out of the Welsh system and not many know that Keith was on Cardiff City's books when they were a good side back in the day (before the lean years) but his career was curtailed by an injury at a young age, so he later took up refereeing!

It's a disgrace good up and coming Welsh referees can't progress any higher than the Welsh Premiership. I know an ex Welsh Premiership referee and he told me after realising he couldn't progress any further, he gave it up because he wasn't earning enough from it and thought what's the point.

Ross, I totally agree and know of people who did the same once it became clear their 'path' was (I'll be polite to the FAW here) somewhat 'limited'

I'm on the Welsh League list, but haven't reffed for an age due to work commitments. You certainly don't ref for the money in Wales!

The FAW set up the national league in the early 90s obviously concerned that the ' Great Britain ' international side could end up being a reality . Obviously without the sides playing in the English feeder system the concept was always going to struggle for much credibility .

Once that was in place no Welsh based official could ply his trade in the FAPL or FL without moving to England .

BTW Ceri Richards is the last Welsh based official in the FAPL . The change in 1992 did not affect current officials.

I stand corrected on Ceri, who I know slightly from my own days on the 'List'

I learned my trade with the late Jack Flye (UEFA Cup Semi-Final Linesman) and Keith (Cooper) was a mentor and member of the Pontypridd Referees Society back in the day (still may be?) ;)

Ceri was a late call up to the 2006 FA Cup final which was ironically in Cardiff .

I find it strange when some officials reckon they cannot go any further than the WPL being based in Wales . That may be so in the domestic game but not in the international game where many Welsh officials are given appointments in Europe . Ryan Stewart in fact has just been appointed onto the FIFA list so it can be done .

Yes, it can be done but the 'money' is in the Premier League and if Welsh clubs can compete, then... ;)

I always feel its odd that our teams aren't governed by the FA whilst in their league! :?

Cardiff like the other Welsh clubs playing in England are associate members of the FA but Full members of the FAW .

However from step 4 of the FA ladder ( which includes Wrexham,Colwyn bay and now Merthyr ) and upwards are governed for disciplinary and administrative matters by the FA.

thanks, I thought that only applied in the Premier League

Started 2012/13 . Player registration is still governed by the FAW , hence international clearance is needed by the FAW which has coursed many headaches over the years .
