Russell Slade says Cardiff City should have done better in front of goal as he admits it's all about results now

The Bluebirds boss was left ruing a number of missed chances as the Bluebirds failed to beat MK Dons


Cardiff City boss Russell Slade was left deeply frustrated as his side wasted a host of chances and had to settle for a goalless draw with struggling MK Dons .

Debutant Tom Lawrence hit the post and the visitor’s goalkeeper David Martin pulled of a string of saves as the Bluebirds had to settle for a point which keeps them five points from the Championship play-off places.


Slade admitted his side really should have done better when it came to the opportunities they had.

“We should have done better for certain, but they had a few lives too,” said Slade.

“Frustration is the word to be honest. It is frustrating, we hit the woodwork, the chances kept coming too, even late on, when we had made changes, we had a great chance to get that all-important goal. It does just become all about results at this stage of the season, it was a solid enough performance, they had a couple of chances as we pushed forward in the second period, but it was frustrating we did not get the three points.

“Teams are coming here, it’s actually some form of respect, but they are making things difficult for us by getting bodies behind the ball. They are just looking to counter-attack as MK Dons did. That was there main way of getting forward so we had to keep the back-door shut and get the balance right.

“But we had ample opportunities to get that goal today.”

The game was close to being called off before hand due to the driving rain in the Welsh capital ahead of kick-off. That the game was played was thanks to Glamorgan Cricket Club who had loaned their sponging machine to take surface water off the pitch, but he said the conditions did not affect the playing of the match too much.


“It did come fairly close to being called off,” said Slade

“If we had not had the sponger, and we are thankful that Glamorgan Cricket Club allowed us to have that this morning, that ensured that the game went ahead. It was touch and go because that tanker got a lot of water off the grass. I was in at 11am and it could have been called off, fair play to the referee, he waited too.

“The far side got difficult in the second-half when the rain came down. It was a bit edgy, the ball was getting stuck, so it was not easy.”

Looking at the highlights I have some sympathy for him. We should have scored 4 or 5. Some lovely crosses by Whitts and Ameobi and that O Keefe chance on the left foot he should have buried.

Quite right Polo, why anyone believes that Carl and Annis have some sort of hotline into the club is beyond me, listen to those two and you would think they are on the board

He plays two in his own words "10's" up front, then the best crosser in the league with no target to aim for. He plays a guy who is a 433 forward in midfield, with our worse defending full back behind him because he isn't a 442 full back but a modern day wing back.
The two central midfielder are constantly over run and when one of them comes deep to get the ball of the centre halfs they lose all connection with the front 2.

We bring our new striker on with 15 mins to go and he looked so under prepared he made Macheda look enthusiastic. We know Russ's 1980's philosophy "get them into the group early" but he plainly isn't ready. I guess the Danish league is a summer league or have a massive lid season break, has he had a pre season ?

I doubt if Slade has that much to do with transfers, but i can't see what he is trying to do.
