Cardiff City 0-0 MK Dons: Match Review
Cardiff dropped a point on the play-offs as they failed to achieve back-to-back wins against MK Dons on Saturday afternoon in a goalless draw and very poor conditions at Cardiff City Stadium.
There were some doubts whether the fixture would go ahead with several pre-match pitch inspections amid heavy rain for the last 24 hours in South Wales. The fixture did go ahead but the result will have had many a Cardiff supporter wishing it hadn’t as Cardiff dropped key points at home.
The conditions had a big effect on the affair with a large amount of surface water making it difficult for players to stay on their feet throughout. It was end-to-end for the most part with both sides having key chances but neither side could grab a goal and both will have felt they could have won it.
Cardiff were sloppy in midfield with a number of mis-judged passes resulting in the breaking down of attacks, perhaps the conditions had an effect but Russell Slade will still be disappointed in the quality of football.
Debutant Tom Lawrence had one of the best chances of the game with a close range header in the first half but his effort was denied by the far post. Lawrence also come close in the second half but his strike was tipped over by Dons keeper Martin.
Former Bluebird Nicky Maynard had a golden chance for the visitors with a close range effort but his shot seemed to take a bobble and fly over the crossbar.
Cardiff are now five points from the top six after Sheffield Wednesday grabbed a late win at Birmingham City. Elsewhere, Ipswich Town lost at QPR with a 1-0 scoreline and drop to seventh.
MK Dons drop to twenty-first following Bristol City’s win over strugglers Charlton Athletic, the Dons are now just two points from the relegation zone.
Cardiff have now piled pressure on themselves as they travel to bottom club Charlton Athletic next Saturday in search of three points. A loss next week could give Cardiff an uphill struggle with tough games against Brighton and Middlesborough in the following weeks.
Man of the Match – Sammy Ameobi
A difficult choice with no real stand-out performances in tough conditions but Sammy Ameobi looked a spark for much of the game, looking Cardiff’s biggest threat on the wide. The Newcastle loanee has struggled since coming to South Wales but today was one of his better games.
