How do Cardiff compare to this time last season?
16/02/05

by Jamie Kemble

Last season was a campaign with little hope and quality as the Bluebirds scraped a top-half finish after a turbulent season but as they chase the play-offs this season and as we move into February, how do this season’s Bluebirds compare with last seasons campaign?

It’ll surprise very few that Cardiff have improved massively on and off the pitch from last season, a 2014/15 campaign they begun under the stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and ended with current manager Russell Slade.

At this point last season, Cardiff had played a game less with twenty-eight games played compared to this seasons twenty-nine so we’re going to include the twenty-ninth game played by Cardiff City last season which was a 1-1 draw away at Sheffield Wednesday.

After twenty-nine games last season, Cardiff had thirty-five points and sat in an unsatisfying fifteenth place in the Sky Bet Championship. This season Cardiff have forty-four points from the twenty-eight games and are six places better off in the league.

As well as being nine points better off, Cardiff have a much better goal difference with +5 currently on the board, compared to last season’s -6 making for an eleven goal improvement.

It’s not so much in the scoring department that Cardiff have improved, with only one goal more (38 this season to 37 last) but in the defensive department there has been a massive improvement with only thirty-three conceded compared to last season’s forty-three.

The Bluebirds only have two more wins compared to this time last season but in the losses column they are fairing much better with seven losses compared to the twelve of last term with an improvement of five.

Russell Slade’s men finished (from this point) relatively well last season picking up seven wins, four losses and six draws from the remaining seventeen games, picking up twenty-seven points. If Cardiff were to finish the season in identical fashion then they would likely miss out on the play-offs, finishing on seventy-one points.

The magic total to make the play-offs last season was seventy-eight, a total matched by Brentford in fifth and Ipswich Town in sixth. Having said that, the season before, the total needed was a very low seventy-two but generally speaking, the total tends to be mid-to-high seventies so Cardiff would need at least two more wins to last seasons record if they were to finish with a play-off spot.

Interestingly, Ipswich Town who lost in last seasons play-off semi-final against local rivals Norwich City, currently occupy the all-important sixth place. Ipswich finished the season last term, identically to Cardiff with twenty-seven points taken from the remaining seventeen fixtures.

If Ipswich finished the season in that form again this term, they would find themselves on seventy-five points so it seems, if teams chasing the play-offs finish this season in similar form to last season then the magic total could be a little lower than usual, meaning Cardiff might only need to add a win and a couple of draws to last seasons finishing form.

The last time Cardiff made the play-offs, in 2011/12, they finished on seventy-five points and had fifty points (six points more than the current campaign) after twenty-nine games but their form suffered a little in the last third of the season and they dropped from third to sixth.

Cardiff’s improvement gives them a solid chance of continuing their play-off chase as we move into the last third of the season. The Bluebirds only need to improve slightly on last seasons February-May form to give themselves a real chance of booking a place in the play-off semi-finals.
