RUSSELL SLADE TODAY TALKS ABOUT PETER WHITTINGHAM

Friday 5th Feb 2016

Peter Whittingham Future

You prove people wrong over a period of time, if he’s to stay in the team we will want him to continue his good form and to effect the game like Saturday.

He’s never been placed with Usain Bolt’s pace, he’s been blessed with technical ability. No one sees a pass better. His set-piece play is of a very high level. There’s always a place for players like that if you retain your enthusiasms. Even here next season. Sometimes people are quick to write individuals off. You have to look at record over long period. He can be a weapon at this club.

Slade praises Whittingham :ayatollah:

He’s always had quality. Getting two goals on Saturday will give him a huge boost, I’ve seen that in training. As you get older it’s important to keep enthusiasm and love of game. When you have set back when older it’s about how you react and Pete has reacted positively to being out. He’s back in and crowned it with two goals. I said to him free-kick was rolling back years. It was vintage Whittingham.

PW is not a central midfield player and operates best as a wide left-sided midfielder. I always think of him as a 'David Beckham' type player. Not a winger with pace but someone who can influence games from a wide position and of course offers fantastic options from set-pieces.

When we signed Craig Bellamy PW was moved from wide to central midfield and it never really worked. His scoring rate dropped dramatically from the height of the 20 goals in one Championship season to a dribble ever since. He's back out wide again and the influence and goals have returned.

said many times before, but that season where he scored all those goals had nothing to do with where he was playing on the field.

From what I remember he was playing left-midfield that season. If I remember correctly Dave Jones encouraged him to get forward more as we needed more goals as a team. When he moved inside he played a more deep lying role which restricted his opportunities to get forward and score. I always thought that was a mistake.

But he scored an exceptional amount from the penalty spot that season

Yes. He was in the same team as Chopra and Bothroyd, both of whom would fall over in the penalty area with great ease! ( Bothroyd would fall over anywhere!)

He scored 25 with 8 from the spot but don't let the truth get in the way of a good Whitts bashing

Fycking hell cant even give the guy credit for scoring 25 goals in a season

That still leaves 17 not from the spot which is exceptional from a midfielder.

He's scored some of the most spectacular goals ever witnessed by City fans but let's make out he only scored a lot of goals cos he's the penalty taker. :sleepy2:
