I personally really had high hopes for Maynard.
' He's back, Nicky Maynard '
Nicky Maynard aged 29, Bluebirds supporters will look back at his time at Cardiff with a great deal of frustration and not a little bemusement. Signed by former-boss Malky Mackay for £2.75m from West Ham, his was an arrival to set the pulses racing at the time.
But before it had even started, it was over in many ways for the Maynard in Wales.
In just his third game for the Bluebirds, away at Millwall, he injured his cruciate ligament and was not seen again until the last game of the campaign as the Bluebirds, by now promoted to the Premier League as champions, drew at Hull. It was the day Maynard score his first Cardiff goal of the four he was finally to get for the club.
It was a second serious knee injury for the luckless striker who had done the same damage at former club Bristol City, the club where he once finished joint-top scorer in the Championship along with a certain Peter Whittingham of Cardiff.
At the Bluebirds, Maynard’s career just never re-ignited. He featured eight times in the Premier League, coming off the bench for them all, and failing to find the net. He was then loaned out to Wigan. He made 12 appearances and got one goal as Cardiff returned to the Championship and left the club when his contract expired at the end of last season.
After signing for the Dons, Maynard seems to be at least gracing the pitch more often with 13 Championship starts this campaign and three league goals so far to his name. One of those, of course, had to come against Cardiff themselves as Russell Slade’s men lost out in Milton Keynes on Boxing Day.
