Jones scores in big win for Al Jazira

Friday, February 5 2016

Kenwyne Jones did not miss out on the opportunity to make his name on the Al Jazira scoreboard in yesterday evening’s Arabian Gulf League (AGL) game against Dibba Al Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

The TT skipper scored Al Jazira’s third item in a stunning 5-1 display at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The seasoned footballer was the epitome of cool, calm and class, as he skilfully navigated defenders and the goalkeeper for a beautiful finish in the 73rd minute. The goal was Jones’ third for the club, helping Al Jazira, dubbed the “Pride of Abu Dhabi” by fans, move up a notch to 10th place in the AGL Standings.

The win came at a critical point in the campaign for Al Jazira, whose 1-2 loss to Al Wahda on the weekend had seen them drop to 11th, two places and two points off the dreaded bottom two places in the relegation zone.

Going into the match, Jones had stressed that defence was an issue. “The reality is that we are that close to the zone,” the centre forward said. “We have to put that out of our minds and get back to the drawing board. We need to start winning games. Defensively, we need to tighten up as a team.

Of course, we also need to score more.” Yesterday’s game started badly for Jones and company as Dibba Al Fujairah opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. But by halftime, Al Jazira were leading 2-1, and it remained that way until Jones struck, and two more goals in the final 17 minutes completed the victory.

Al Jazira now have five wins, four draws and eight losses for a total of 17 points.

On Valentine’s Day 2016 (February 14), Al Jazira Club meet Al Shabab FC, at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium.
