Alex Revell opens up on his Cardiff City nightmare, saying he was 'fighting losing battle' from the start

Tuesday 3rd Feb 2016

Revell moved to MK Dons on deadline day and admits it will be hard going back to Cardiff to visit his family

Striker Alex Revell has revealed the deep frustration he felt at Cardiff City and how he sensed he was always fighting a losing battle during his year in the Welsh capital.

The 32-year-old departed the Bluebirds on transfer deadline day signing a permanent deal with MK Dons. The Dons face the Bluebirds on Saturday in the Championship, but it is understood Revell will not be allowed to play in that encounter.

After being signed by Cardiff boss Russell Slade from Rotherham in January last year, Revell’s time at the club did indeed prove to be a total failure. Despite making 30 appearances for Slade he managed just three goals, with two of those coming in the league.

Ironically enough, one of those came in his first start for Cardiff back on January 17 last year when he found the net as Cardiff lost 3-2 at Norwich.

But Revell has now insisted even doing that was not enough to satisfy in the Welsh capital and he knew immediately he was in for a tough time with the Bluebirds. He has now spoken of his relief at getting away from the Bluebirds and revealed he will actually find it hard having to come back to Cardiff itself just to visit his family.

“Unfortunately it just didn’t happen at Cardiff,” said Revel, speaking to the Milton Keynes Citizen .

“It was a chance I had to take because it was a club that everyone would want to play for. It was a massive opportunity, and even scoring on my debut wasn’t enough. I knew from then it was going to be a losing battle.

“But I didn’t give up. I still want to play, and I’m disappointed that it didn’t work because I wanted to go there and do well. It’s time to forget about it now though, but it will be hard because my family is still there, so I’ll be going back a lot.

“It has been a tough year, but it’s about enjoying my football and getting back to where I feel I was at my best. I believe I can be an asset to the side.”

With Slade bringing in attack-minded players in Lex Immers, Kenneth Zohore and Tom Lawrence in the January transfer window, Revell was finally seen as superfluous to requirements at the Welsh club and allowed to go.

Kenneth Zohore has joined Cardiff City on loanKenneth Zohore joined Cardiff City on loan on deadline day
The player himself is relieved he was able to get away from Cardiff and join the Dons in their Championship relegation fight.

And he said as the transfer deadline loomed he feared he might not be going. In fact he only learned the deal was on at 4pm on Monday afternoon.

“I thought I was going to be at Cardiff until the end of the season which isn’t what I wanted because it just breeds uncertainty,”added Revell.

“It’s a bit stressful, but once the deal goes through it was a relief. I was playing with my little boy in the park in Cardiff, then all of a sudden I had to be in the car! But that’s football, you’re only in it for a little while, so you’ve got to make the most of it.

“You’re quickly forgotten in football so for me I had to go somewhere I could play and be involved. I said this was the club for me, because it’s close for home to me and I can bring my family here in the summer. This was the one I wanted to happen.

“I’m from Cambridge and I want to get my family here, so it couldn’t have worked out better for me. I was excited, the family is excited and it’s a fresh start. I can leave everything that has happened in the last year behind me and start again.”

Analysis: After three loans in January, we look at best and worst of the Bluebirds' on-loan players down the years

Revell links up at the Dons with another former Cardiff player in Jay Emmanuel-Thomas who also signed for the Dons yesterday on loan from QPR.

Emmanuel-Thomas made 16 appearances for the Bluebirds back in 2011 during a loan spell from then-club Arsenal. He scored twice for Cardiff.

Couldn't fault his effort, but unfortunately he didn't score often enough, or cause enough problems to Championship defences. We've had worse, but thank you and goodbye :bluescarf:

Dont see it as a terrible signing at all really. He was brought here as a short term option, had a few good games, scored a couple of goals but nothing special, and is now at another championship club

Thought the goal he scored at Brentford was special, but I'm bitterly disappoiunted the club didn't put a clause in his contract, that he had to play the full 90 minutes against us on Saturday! ;)

When I read stuff like this, it makes me think we are sometimes overly harsh on certain players!

We certainly cannot accuse Revel of not trying (unlike some) and he didn't kick up a fuss either (unlike some)!

I wish him good luck at MK Dons and (given he is not playing this Saturday) I hope he gets a hatful for them! :ayatollah:

We all have feelings (and probably a few other classic 1970's records, too!) ;) :laughing6:

Not championship level, and Sunday league level at best.. 30games, 3 goals is a shocking return and I see better strikers at Roath Park on a sat / sun.. IMO awful signing as most of slades others.

Lucky to still be in The Championship

Chris, 100% gave his all, just not good enough for the top half of the Championship and 3 goals in 30 games proves it as he was suppose to be signed as a striker.

Steve, Slade brought him and he personally signed Revell.

As to Slade himself he's growing on me  :bluebird:

'even a debut goal wasn't enough' and an 'uphill battle'.

What on earth is he talking about.

No 3 goals in 30 isn't enough unfortunately Alex and for you I'm afraid the championship will always be an uphill battle because your not quite good enough, especially up the top end of the table. It's not like he didn't get a decent run!

Re: " I Was Fighting a Losing Battle "

Tue Feb 02, 2016 5:03 pm

Losing battle?? Revell you had a great chance to prove yourself, yes you may have worked hard but my gosh you were out of your depth in this division, you barely made no contribution to the side and was not a threat on goal, we needed to get rid of this guy because quite frankly you are useless!

Re: " I Was Fighting a Losing Battle "

Tue Feb 02, 2016 5:36 pm

Don't think he's ever been a prolific goal scorer in all his career so was never expecting much. Can't fault his work rate but just not good enough for this division.

Re: " I Was Fighting a Losing Battle "

Tue Feb 02, 2016 5:46 pm

He seems to have a bit of an overinflated opinion of himself not good enough for Championship.

Great work ethic and a top guy by all accounts, wish him all the best.

Sadly he didn't have aggression for the position he played in which I personally think he needs.

If Kenwyne Jones had Alex Revels work ethic we would have had a very decent striker! Revell always gave 100% when he played but just didn't score enough goals I wish him well at MK Dons and thank him for his efforts. :old: :bluescarf:
