Russell Slade expects new faces

Russell Slade has admitted he wants to avoid the Monday blues by landing two players for Cardiff City's play-off push following a vital away success at Huddersfield.

And he admitted one may well be Kenneth Zohore who could end up becoming a Bluebird via Belgium.

The Bluebirds moved to within three points of the promotion places with a 3-2 victory over the Terriers to take advantage of rivals' weekend inactivity, with Peter Whittingham grabbing a double either side of new boy Lex Immers' debut strike.

It came as a fillip to Slade and supporters who had been left frustrated by Joe Mason's £3m departure to Wolves at a time they are restricted in their recruitment by their FFP transfer ban.

But now Slade is keen to add two further signings by Monday's transfer deadline, including Zohore who he admitted could be set for a loan move to Cardiff City Stadium if he is signed by KVK Kortrijk – the Bluebirds' sister club.

KVK are owned by Cardiff backer Vincent Tan, and Slade said: “There is the possibility if KVK get it over the line that we could take him.”

He added: “We do expect things to happen and people to come in. I'd be disappointed not to get what we've worked so hard for now. It will go right up to the wire but I'm confident of one or two.”

It would make it a pleasing few days for Slade after the setback of Mason's exit, but now he wants his team to follow up their victory with a win over MK Dons at home next Saturday as they aim to keep the top-six pressure on.

He said: “It's back-to-back away wins for us which is not easy in this league. We're disappointed we didn't get the win over Rotherham so we have an opportunity now to get some momentum at home and that's what we spoke about after the game.

“We had to give ourselves a chance with others not playing – we've done that but now we want to back it up at home.

“It was a difficult game for us in difficult conditions for both sides and there wasn't many chances for either side. We scored from the best piece of quality but we didn't manage to see it through to and we had words because I thought we were capable of more.

“But we did show more after the break, we showed a bit more menace and looked a threat on the counter.

“The free-kick from Whitts was like rolling back the years and it was first goal for Lex which will give him a boost. He has that knack of getting in the right place and in the box at the right time, a willingness and you can see why he scored goals in Holland.”

Immers played behind Anthony Pilkington, who Slade revealed played despite doubts over his availability with a hamstring problem.

“He was a real doubt and had a test on Saturday morning and he was restricted in his running but he gave us an hour and some know-how,” Slade added.

Desperately need a new striker. I'd say a wide player as well and if possible another centre midfielder - but the last one is not a necessity and not as crucial with the restrictions in place.
