Former Bluebird Chris Burke on why he had to 'do the ayatollah' and admits fond memories of Cardiff spell

Chris Burke was a popular player during his time at Cardiff

Former Cardiff City hero Chris Burke has revealed how the Bluebirds’ home crowd finally made him give in as he made his debut for new club Rotherham in the Welsh capital on the weekend.

The 32-year-old wideman joined the Millers on loan last week from Nottingham Forest and his first outing for his new club was against the side he spent two-and-a-half years with previously.

Throughout the encounter, typically, Burke was urged by the home crowd to indulge in the Bluebirds famous celebration. With regular chants ringing round the ground every time he was near the ball of, ‘Burkey, do the ayatollah!’

Burke tried and tried to resist as he tried to focus on helping his new club, but finally the Cardiff supporters got what they wanted.

“Yes, I eventually crumbled and did it,” revealed Burke.

“I have got very good memories at Cardiff and the fans were fantastic. I have lots of love for the club and my family were very happy here. It’s a great club and hopefully next year they will be in the Premier League.”

And despite helping put a dent in the promotion hopes of his former club, Burke insists Slade’s side can still make the top-six, adding: “They have got a very good chance of getting to the play-offs. This league is very unpredictable, they have always got a chance. Get a run together in this league and you know what can happen.”

Burke was signed by Cardiff back in January 2009 from Rangers by former Bluebirds’ boss Dave Jones and given his first taste of the English leagues. He went on to make 121 appearances for Cardiff, scoring 16 goals in the process, before moving onto Birmingham and then to Forest.

And he admitted he does have fond memories of his time in South Wales.

Burke said: “I was very fortunate to be given the chance to play in the Championship. Coming from the SPL, Dave Jones gave me the opportunity and Cardiff were my first club and that is my fondest memory.”

He was a little gem another one plucked out of the Scottish Leagues. Obviously those leagues must have dried up with any talent.

Old DJ did get some brilliant players for nothing or on the cheap, yes I know he had a few duds (not as many as RS).

To many Cooks picking the players these days maybe they should get DJ back to take charge of recruiting players and sorting the scouting system out. :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

I loved Chris Burke!

To be fair we've signed a few gems from the SPL over recent years.

Still some decent players up here but they all end up going to Celtic instead of down south.
