Cardiff City boss Russell Slade accused his players of wasting a golden opportunity to close in on the Championship play-off places after a frustrating draw against struggling Rotherham.

A 2-2 draw in the Welsh capital, which saw Anthony Pilkington score a brace for the Bluebirds and put into his own net, saw Slade’s men stay where they were in the table, still five points from the top six.

The Cardiff manager said the Millers had scrapped, but insisted his side should have had the quality to see them off.

And he warned opportunities to make up ground were now running out.

“There are not going to be too many opportunities between now and the end of the season in games like that when you have created the greater chances,” said Slade.

“You can’t waste those, that’s a problem there. There are not going to be too many more of those now.

“The opposition have not been a fantastic threat. Rotherham always fight and scrap, that’s the kind of team they are, but we had more quality in my opinion than they had.

“Of course it’s frustrating, we’ve not lost any ground but it could have been so much better. There’s disappointment, we made errors, but there are positives. It was an excellent performance from Anthony Pilkington and I’m very pleased with him. In fact we created enough chances to win the game.”

Pilkington, now pressed into a frontman role, opened the scoring, but Cardiff were rocked on the stroke of half-time as Joe Newell brought the visitors level. Then Pilkington saw the ball hit him from a corner and go in his own net before his strike spared Slade’s brushes and rescued a point. Cardiff had Lee Peltier sent off late on for two yellow cards.

Slade was again left ruing a series of chances his side created, but failed to convert.

“We started brightly enough, but we made mistakes in the middle third in terms of controlling the game and giving the ball away,” added the Bluebirds’ boss.

“We still created some wonderful opportunities before we even got the goal. We could have been in front.

“Rotherham did not offer too many threats in the first period and I was disappointed to go in 1-1. It was just a simple clip down the side really and David has elected to come and he was probably never going to get there.

“But it’s about reacting to such setbacks. Our reaction after the own goal and our attitude were good, we got the second and had a couple of wonderful opportunities.”

You can predict the bollox he comes out with. We have lost ground, we have one less home game !!!!

What is our game plan, what are we trying to do, what the hell were those subs about. Ameobi is only a micron less useless than Mason. I am rejoicing I only have 8 more games to watch this season....

Beller not becoming a manager until June means we have you up to then by the look of it. :(

Week in week out we have to listen to his never ending bollux!!!!

Hes an average manager at best...tactically inept..unable to motivate and shite at game management

Should never have been given the job in the first place!!!

Would be nice if one week he just admitted he himself got it wrong

I agree with him. We had enough chances to put Rotherham to bed. And players on 5 -10k a week should be burying them.

Totally agree, though do not think much of Slade, bottom line is that we should have put this game to bed and we should be all celebrating. Instead inept professionals have let us down again!!! :bluescarf:

Yes not saying Slade is good or bad but players were in positions to finish game off. Pilkington and immers had 1 on 1 ' s and Bruno and peltier both should of at least hit the target :thumbright:
