Police lift the 'bubble' restriction for next Bristol City v Cardiff match in March

By Western Daily Press

January 23, 2016

Bristol City fans have broadly welcomed the lifting of 'bubble' travel restrictions when Cardiff visit Ashton Gate for the Championship match on Saturday, March 5.

In the past Cardiff City supporters have been forced to travel to Bristol by coach to reduce the chance of crowd trouble.

Bristol City supporters had to pick up tickets from a service station on the M4 for the last away game at Cardiff in October.

But Avon and Somerset Constabulary confirmed the restriction had been lifted for the next Severnside derby, which has a 12pm kick-off.

Superintendent Pete Warren, match commander, said: "We have told the two clubs restrictions should be removed as part of the on-going partnership work, to allow free travel for supporters of both the clubs for matches held in Bristol and Cardiff.

"We will, of course, have a police operation for the match, which will be intelligence-led and include us working with our police officer colleagues in South Wales, as well as both clubs.

"The priority is for a safe and enjoyable day for both sets of supporters, ensuring the impact of the game on visitors to the city, local residents and businesses, is kept to a minimum.

"Club stewards will remove anyone from the ground that is being disrespectful to others, whether it is through racial chanting or abusive language.

"We will support the club's action and arrest them for any offences committed. This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated by either the club or us. Those who cause problems – anti social behaviour or violence – should be aware that they could be arrested and subsequent charge could result in a football banning order.

"We urge both sets of fans to have an enjoyable trouble-free match.

"It is a great opportunity for both sets of fans to demonstrate that restrictions on travel and attendance are something that is no longer required for this fixture."

Following a 2013 clash police were looking for a gang of 16 who went on a wrecking spree in a pub ahead of the game in the Welsh capital, throwing glasses, damaging furniture and letting off a smoke bomb.

Yobs then injured Robins supporters when they pushed their way out of the Cardiff City Stadium, after being kept behind following the final whistle.

There were also reports of disturbances on the train.

Bristol City supporters have always been against the restrictions and said it was disappointing that its fans were inconvenienced earlier in the campaign.

However, they added they were pleased police had shown a willingness to relax restrictions and they hoped it would continue for future games – both home and away.

The Bristol City Supporters Club & Trust said in a statement: "Regardless of the fact that City fans were not able to travel freely to our last game in Cardiff, the Club & Trust board took the view that two wrongs don't make a right and that there was no way that it could support law-abiding fans of any club having their freedom of movement restricted."

' NO TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS FOR CARDIFF FANS AWAY TO BRISTOL CITY '

Visiting supporters will travel as normal for Severnside derby clash.

It has been announced that Cardiff City supporters will be able to travel without restrictions for the Severnside derby match at Ashton Gate on Saturday, March 5th (12noon kick-off).

This follows a previous announcement from the Police to reciprocate the arrangements that were in place for City supporters who visited Cardiff City Stadium in October, which involved collecting match tickets en route via a service station.

As a club we have always been against restrictions being placed on supporters’ travel arrangements, and it’s disappointing that City fans were inconvenienced earlier in the campaign.

However, we are pleased the Police have shown a willingness to relax restrictions and hope this will continue to be common practice in the future for both clubs.

The Bristol City Supporters Club & Trust said in a statement: “Regardless of the fact that City fans were not able to travel freely to our last game in Cardiff, the Club & Trust board took the view that two wrongs don’t make a right and that there was no way that it could support law-abiding fans of any club having their freedom of movement restricted.”

This is good. Our last visit to Ashton gate passed off peacefully despite loads of cardiff travelling by train so why should we have been punished.

Bristol here, Stapes, you have in one. It's pretty obvious what the plan is from the OB, Nick as many as possible and ban them from going to France in the summer!

Was in Clifton earlier in the week and noticed posters advertising a new song. How are Bristol doing anyway? Apparently they were looking at doing a Bournemouth and straight up into the PL.

For those saying it's a trap if you behave yourselfs and don't rise to any silly games played by the Wurzels or the filth you will be fine. I have no problem with heavy bans being handed out for this game. I hate bubble trips and i'm over the moon that's been changed, if any cunts from both sides want to spoil it for the future let the full force of the law smash down on them.

Having said that I was ordered to leave Bristol once, I had one of those slips from the coppers and was more or less marched down to the train station. My only true indiscretion following Cardiff.

It's been poor but this game with no restrictions will be in big demand, thought we would get more tickets than that ?
