Swansea City fans ridicule new Cardiff City signing Lex Immers' 'biggest team in Wales' claim as Wembley photo emerges

FRIDAY 22 JAN 2016

BY PAUL ABBANDONATO

Swansea's Dutch-based director John Van Zweden posts tweet of Immers with the Swans at Wembley... and fans inevitably latch on with their own comments!

When new Cardiff City Dutch capture Lex Immers uttered the words "I'm very excited to be coming from one of the biggest teams in the Netherlands to the biggest team in Wales," it was bound to ruffle a few feathers 40 miles down the M4.

Few, however, would quite have anticipated Swansea's Dutch-based director John Van Zweden going onto social networking to claim Immers once followed the Swans at Wembley!

A picture was posted on Twitter of Immers posing with supporters holding a joint Swansea City-Den Haag scarf ahead of the 2011 Championship play-off final against Reading.

That was the game, of course, in which Scott Sinclair struck a hat-trick as Swansea powered to the 4-2 victory which sealed their Premier League position.

There are strong links between Swansea and Den Haag, flags of the respective clubs often flown at matches involving the sides in Wales and the Netherlands.

Exciting midfielder Immers made 145 appearances for Den Haag, scoring 25 goals, before joining Feyenoord in 2012.

Upon joining the Bluebirds on loan this week , Immers said: "It's always been an ambition of mine to play in the UK and I'm looking forward to getting the opportunity to do that, here at Cardiff City.

"I'm very excited to be coming from one of the biggest teams in the Netherlands to the biggest team in Wales."

Cardiff, of course, are perceived by most as the biggest club in Wales because of their history and enormous fan base... although perhaps use of the phrase 'biggest team' brought the inevitable wrath from Swans fans, given their own side's Premier League status.

Immers would have made his comments innocently rnough, unaware of the intense rivalry between Cardiff and Swansea.

But as soon as his 'biggest team in Wales' remark hit the headlines, the inevitable reaction followed.

Leading the way was Swansea director Van Zweden, who had been tweeting about Immers' move to Wales ahead of the deal being formally signed.

"Good luck at @CardiffCityFC," Van Zweden tweeted, before putting #oneteaminwales and pushing the Swans' twitter feed.

He also retweeted the picture of Immers with Swansea fans at the play-off final.

Swans fans immediately, and perhaps inevitably, latched onto Van Zweden's tweet and began making their own somewhat mischievous comments about Immers.

As for the player himself, Cardiff fans are hoping he can spark a promotion push in the closing months of the season.

Russell Slade's Bluebirds are under a Football League transfer embargo, but they are still able to sign players on loan during the January window. Hence Immers' arrival in time for the Championship clash with Rotherham.

Whatever may have happened before, Immers' loyalties are very much with Cardiff City... although if he's a reader of social media, he will certainly be aware of the intense rivalry of the two Welsh clubs by this stage.

Such is the power of social networking, it seems.

So some Pikey comes up to them and asks to have a photo to show his girlfriend (mother or sister whichever) and he is suddenly a fan of the jerks. He isn't even holding the scarf. Just stood there.
He probably agreed as it had Den Haag on it, and was only there for the free ticket to visit Wembley. He must have realised then that Swansea are a small club as anyone could get tickets for such a big game in their history. He would have had no chance if Cardiff were playing that day.

That is why he knows who is the biggest club. :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

Two photos, one of him looking really pleased and happy and smiling , and one of him looking really embarrassed and a little sad and not smiling .
So I think I'll go with the happy smiling one .

Correct, I doubt if many people would class Bournemouth as a bigger club than Leeds any more than people would think of Swansea being a bigger club than Cardiff, apart from some disillusioned Jack supporters. They may be better than us right now, but as far as size is concerned they are on a par with Cwm Welfare.

The two clubs have a link probably fan wise and club wise.. just shows how petty Swansea supporters are bringing this up.

The Jacks must be desperate to take their minds off things like imminent relegation, loss of tidal lagoon project and having a house that looks like Hitler.

To be honest, there aren't many championship clubs that Swansea can say they are bigger than is there? Rotherham, Brentford and Preston maybe....

No way are the Jacks bigger than Preston.

Jacks getting interested in us again because we might be playing each other next season!

 I once had a photo in front of Big Ben. Doesn't make me a politician.

As one comment suggested, this was started out of mischief. Who cares who he supported anyway? Plenty of Bluebirds grew up supporting other clubs and even admit it now.

What matters is how he fares having been appointed.

This 'big club' thing is a joke. Again, who cares?

Concentrate on the football and the way the club is run. Then perhaps some of the negatives will start to be redressed.

Who cares, in the late 80's Alan Curtis used to wear a Cardiff City polo shirt in the Griffin Pub in Pentre, big deal!
